Keeping with the theme of iron doors and iron trapdoors, why not an iron chest that will not open until a redstone current is applied, at which point it would unlock and act like a normal chest? This could be used in plenty of custom maps, or even in survival for a slightly-securer storage option. Iron chests would have a higher blast resistance, around 30 or so, preventing the items inside from being potentially lost. Iron chest sizes would be equivalent to standard chest sizes, with 27 slots.
The crafting recipe would be 8 iron ingots and a redstone dust in the middle.
Naturally, this would come in double-chest and minecart iron chest variants too.
This would be awesome for map makers. Multiplayer survival would also benefit a lot. When I first saw this I thought it would be a request to add in the mod, but instead this fits into the redstone-iron theme while still being useful.
Even without making classic chests vulnerable, this part of the idea could be useful.
Perhaps as an Iron Chest:
— crafted from 8 Iron ingots & 1 redstone dust
— sized like a half chest (27 slots) and generates a comparator output on the same scale
— canNOT be placed orthogonally next to each other (diagonals permitted)
— blast resistance 30 [Block of Iron & Iron Bars are 30, Chest is 12.5, Enderchest 3000, Hopper 24, Iron Door & Iron Trapdoor 25]
Tending to Support – I lke the idea of something intermediate to the chest and the enderchest, but need more details about your idea….
At the time I had concerns about the double chest (54 storage slot) version, but no longer see this as an issue. [Particularly given the upcoming changes to chest placement rules.]
QUESTION: You indicate "an iron chest that will not open(as though the player right-clicked a solid block like dirt) until a redstone current is applied, at which point it would act like a normal chest".
Does this mean that an applied RS signal will
cause the chest to open?
OR
allow the chest to be opened by the player (effectively just 'unlocking' the chest)?
The latter option might be more useful (both for maps & security) if the texture of the Iron chest were similar to normal chests (as is the trapped chest texture.)

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.

You make a lot of good points. I thought I had been thorough, but I guess it was late at night when I posted this. I'll add in more details immediately, thank you.
To answer your question, I was imagining it would simply unlock the chest - but opening it could work too.

I like unlocking rather than opening the chest. My question is...
If the chest becomes locked while the player is accessing, they simply get kicked out of it right?
