I'm not sure if it would really work... but I (personally) always enjoy games with an editor, I spent hours in Skate 3 building levels, I spent hours in Halo Reach building levels; being able to create and SHARE is a good thing. I know you can create cool bases and take videos and post them on youtube, but I'm not talking about just levels.
THIS IS NOT CLASSIC.
I think there should be an editor mode where you can basically build your own game using minecraft. Not a lot of technical stuff would be in it, although an 'advanced' button could be implemented. Possibly be able to create a level (I'm not too sure on editing it all as 'almighty god' where you can change the landscape and everything) I'm not really sure how the building would work out; either have it all be handmade or have just infinite blocks (as the creator.) There could be pre-loaded NPC textures, and you could edit what they say, what they do, what their names are. Basically like I said, create your own game with Minecraft. If want to have your guy spawn, talk to a guy and he says "Build whatever you want, survive for 40 nights and return to me." go for it. And once you finish the level it will be playable by you (NOTE: this will not be part of your survival game mode, I'd assume it'd be a whole new game mode.) and if you want, you could upload it and have the world play your level. (NOTE ALSO: You would only be able to play as 'creator' on your level unless there was a way to get special permissions from another person so you can help them with thier level or something along those lines)
My 2 biggest concerns with this concept:
Stupid People. I fear that there will be too many people who just make a giant penis and have an NPC say 'you suck.' That would kind of kill the whole point of the uploads, because too many people would kind of just give up on trying to download those levels.
Scripting. I'd imagine that creating your own game would require some sort of knowledge with scripting of some sort.
Troubleshooting:
For the stupid people, maybe people could specifically avoid those because a possible new forum could be added for those levels. So if someone goes on the forums and sees a topic like "Check Out My Level!" and then see what its called, they could look it up in the uploads and download that specific one, to avoid the annoyances.
For the scripting, I really just think that some official tutorials could come out with that. If anyones ever heard of Engine001, I'd imagine it would be about like that, which is actually really easy to learn (It's basically this: Pick an event, e.g. 'talked to' then you can say that it triggers the person to give you something... stuff like that.) . And like I said, it would be another game mode, so it's not like you MUST play it, if you can't figure out how to do it, then just don't; sorry but there's really no use in playing something you can't understand.
PLEASE PLEASE tell me what you guys think, this took a long time to type, haha.
So basicly a type of adventure mode? Except you make some of the code yourself (Like mob behavior?).
I think that minecraft could use some sort of story-line, (However I dont see any way that could be added) so untill then we could just make up our own little stories in SSP or SMP.
Also, I think adventure mode is planned once the game is fully released.

Well, I'd imagine the people who are good at it would be able to set up quests of some sort, a currency system, really anything.
But for the people who don't really know how to do it they'd probably make something really basic.
And I would just have tons of fun making my own game/gametypes and sharing it with people,I don't play online very often, so I'd like to have a little bit of a switch up from the survival every once in a while, haha.
i actually really like this idea, being able to download different scenarios such as a Castle siege. or a zombie invasion or just a plain city with npcs that will ask you to do quests. it would be a fun edition to see such an editor once adventure mode is released.
Oh, and these game modes that people will make will most likely have a similar feel to how adventure mode might be. Some could have a survival feel to them, but most would have quests, or even just a whole new game type, like zombie seige, or even a mode (I have another post on it) where you have to break enemy walls and kill the enemies. Stuff like that.
I REALLY hope this comes to Minecraft. I don't want to sound cocky, but I kind of wish I didn't think of this idea, it's really making me want to make my own scenario now. haha
1. if this were implemented then the first and most obvious thing would be the control of blocks, they would be completely changeable, you could change if they could be mined or not, or if they have more resistance than now, or their texture pack, their would be a special option to give them different properties example
blocks{stone{1.resistance:18%
2. texture pack: idk
3. mine-able: yes
4. properties{ 1. flammable: no
2. explosive: no
3. musical: no
4. gravity affected: yes
5. ETC ETC ETC
this sort of control would allow a different enviroment in every scenario and would allow for more realistic things (like a place where you can't break stone with your hands) or a fantasy world (sort of like right now)
2. this sort of interface would also allow you to change different mob behaviors or textures, and in the future it could even use the Mob Maker so that people can import their own creatures into their scenarios/games. example
3. and it would also give the player the ability to control the ways trees grow or what type of trees grow, (for lack of idea of how this would work I won't post an example) and also allow the creation of specialized building HUMAN mobs.
4. this mod, (or hopefully implementation into the game) would also give you new camera angles (third person) and would give a tool to adjust entire biomes of land with a few clicks of a button, sort of like The Sims 2 allows you to manipulate the land (if you don't understand please watch a video of the sims 2). it would also have a enmy spawn option, so that you could choose to make mobs spawn at a certain place at a certain time in a certain number. and therefore add an RPG like gameplay.
5. it would also allow you to manipulate the things you can say to npc humans. with special options that would connect certain (preset) conversations to actions. example
You: 1. hello there trader, may i buy some items
2. give me your money. *leads to him becoming hostile*
3. could i help you *leads to him giving you quest*
trader: (if you chose the first) why yes, what would you like.
at this point in the conversation a chest would open up this being the traders inventory
you: *click on iron sword*
trader: ok please give me X amount of coins.
you: *put X amount of coins in the traders inventory*
trader: here you go *iron sword falls out*
of course this sort of chat would not be strict to this, you could change what you say and how you say it, and of course what happens, the trader could for example, instead of give you a sword after you pay him, rob you and run away.
6. and you would be given a special cinematic recording option so that you can make cutscenes and then implement them into the game. for example you are talking to a girl, you say a lot of nice things to her. her preset conversation options will begin to change and eventually a *kiss* option will appear. when you click it. it will go to a cutscene of you making out with her (or at least you getting close to her and appearing to kiss.) which would change your relations ship with her in a certain way.
and there would be area activated cutscenes which would activate if you are to walk into a certain room, or piece of land. for example you are in a giant dungeon, you find a large room with a treasure chest. but the moment you open the chest however it goes to a cutscene, in this cutscene the entire room shakes and a giant skeleton (or whatever) stomps into the room, you then leave the cutscene and battle this boss mob.
7. of course the majority of scenarios would not be like this and would be simple and downright stupid. but there would be three or four which would use all of these ideas and be completely wonderful, and action packed and passionate. just like an RPG. but better because ANYONE can make one.

I actually had some of those ideas; I guess I just didn't clarify it, it was more of a concious thing in my head. But yeah thanks for adding to it, those are some great additions to it.

It seems like it may have a few problems to work out as it
starts, but i feel like it could be a cool thing to do.

A great beginig for this type of game mode
the OP unfortunately does not tell the full scope of ideas and games this could bring. the following wall of text gives my point of view.
1. blocks
2. mobs
3. trees
4. map creation/mob spawning
5. npc conversations/ actions
6. preset cutscenes
7. conclusion
1. if this were implemented then the first and most obvious thing would be the control of blocks, they would be completely changeable, you could change if they could be mined or not, or if they have more resistance than now, or their texture pack, their would be a special option to give them different properties example

this sort of control would allow a different enviroment in every scenario and would allow for more realistic things (like a place where you can't break stone with your hands) or a fantasy world (sort of like right now)
2. this sort of interface would also allow you to change different mob behaviors or textures, and in the future it could even use the Mob Maker so that people can import their own creatures into their scenarios/games. example
mobs{pig{1. behavior: neutral unless attacked
2. texture pack: IDK
3. spawns: grass, dirt, leaves.
3. drops: redstone, or whatever
4. properties{ 1. explosive: no
2. underwater:no
3. flies: HELL YEAH!!
