One of the first things I did in Minecraft was set a tree on fire after making a flint.
One of the first things I hoped would happen would be that new trees would automatically grow where the tree had been and burned.
So here's my suggestion: Seedlings would drop from that catch on fire and would grow into new trees wherever they drop.
Process:
1. Tree burn
2. Seedlings are dropped
3. Period of time passes
4. Seedlings become saplings
5. Saplings become trees
6. Rinse
7. Repeat
(Variables: Perhaps all dropped seedlings would turn into saplings? i.e. Not just those dropped during a fire).
This has some precedence in nature, especially amongst piney woods, (perhaps only pine trees would do this, but I would rather it for all trees) and I think it would lend nicely to the beautiful randomness and realness that makes minecraft so special.
(A potential creative use for this would be burning gardens: trees that caught on fire and regrew randomly around a lava waterfall...also imagine just burning down some woods and then seeing it regrow all differently the next time around.)
This could pose a problem with megatrees though, if you would rather burn them to get out of the way to clear up land for building. Would the seedlings be able to be prevented from sprouting?
That would sorta be cool, like having pinecones from the cornifers in the leaves (new block) and when they drop they drop pinecones and then what you explained happens

while this is cool and adds a tone of realism to the game, what if you want to make a garden or you are setting the leaves on fire to chop down the wood.?
you want to make a garden, so you chop down some leaves, and a seedling falls out. You go to grab it, BUT instead it is absorbed into the ground and turns into a tree, conclusion: it would make it impossible to grab seedlings.
now you are using the fire method to chop down trees. you set the trees on fire and start chopping, but after a minute or so, the entire ground is covered in seeds, miles and miles around nothing but seedlings.
this would also make it possible to make unpassable forest's which technically mean that the amount of seeds right next to each other make a giant wall of wood that makes passing improbable unless if you own a dozen diamond axes.
(really good idea, but is there a solution to the above problems?)
Maybe have a time (X amount of time) before they go into the ground, and if they are into the ground they have a distinct look, so you could use a hoe and pick 'em up
I like the lumberjack thread, where there are roots instead of sapplings and what not, if those 2 ideas went together it would be awes-tastic (do not quote me on that)

I think that many of the problems that have been pointed out would be taken care of if the seedlings remained on the ground for a time before turning into (planted) saplings. Perhaps even overnight. That way, if you were clearing an entire field, you could just run through and grab the seedlings before they planted themselves.
I am not aware of the lumberjack thread. Maybe I'll take a look there. I have always liked the idea of roots and maybe I can bundle this suggestion in there.

How about 5 min? That's how long it takes items to despawn.

Maybe after 5 min there is a 25% - 50% chance of it becoming planted so there aren't massive wood walls whenever a fire goes through?
perhaps trees just need a "stump" that has a chance of not burning. If it doesn't burn then the stump will grow a new tree. Alternatively, if you cut a tree down and leave the stump it will re-grow.

That sounds like a simple way of adding it. Could be cool if saplings had a chance of rooting themselves in the ground when they fall.
