So I really love all the add ons and mods, and that they have their own space on the official boards. The fact that you guys encourage people to make the game more their own is really encouraging to me... But here's the thing. Because the game is in beta, it's buggy as all hell, and the developers who make beta mods and addons for a beta product... I have nightmares of bluescreens and frozen computers. Anyway. This is definitely NOT something that should be implemented in beta phase, but something that I expect to see when the finished product is released, or maybe some time after...

Take most of the ideas people have... New recipes, new items, new mobs... All these things could be modified, imported and exported via the game itself, or a shootoff executable. Think about it... having a very simple and easy to use SDK that is acessible to all minecraft fans would mean that mods follow one format, are easy to create and install, and you don't have to have headaches about mods potentially crashing your game!
Incorporating a redundancy checker would mean that recipes using the same material list would alert the user... Or possibly offer a menu asking which item they meant to craft on crafting. Even creating new mobs, allowing users to edit their statistics, would only further enable players to fully express their creativity.
What it would need is basically a paintbrush-esque graphics editor and a simple GUI presenting everything from statistics to durability, to the icon image that should be shown.
Will this allow players to absolutely shatter the gamebalance? Absolutely. Will it allow players to create their own worlds with their own flavor? Yup. But people can do all these things with mods already... This just makes add ons safe and compatible. And let's face it... if some newb wants to create a wooden pickaxe that demolishes diamond blocks in one shot... What the hell, it's his game, let him have fun. Doesn't mean you have to :smile.gif:
So... comments? Suggestions? Ambitious indie programmers want to get together and make this for minecraft with me? Hit me up or reply :smile.gif:

Thanks fo the support :smile.gif: I know a lot of people out there who have these great ideas, or things they'd like to see in their game, and I think this would be a great way to enable them without making massive overhauls to EVERYONE'S game... because let's face it, everyone desires a different style, both in aesthetic and in play style.
Notch plans on doing this with the Texture Pack/Modding API when he finishes the game to allow all of the external mods to be easily plugged in without all of the drag and drop methods and .jar modification.

And see, that's why I asked you to check out my thread.
Where can you find this news? Been looking, can't seem to locate it. T_T

And besides, mods help a lot. I think there is a scuba gear mod. I forget.
