Alright, I originally started typing this up as a response to another thread, but I decided afterward that it really necessitated its own thread.
World maps. People have been wanting something like this for a long time, but a realistically practical way of working them into the game is a big reason why they haven't gone in. And besides, Cartographer can easily make a map for you, and a compass is good enough, so what's the use, right?
The problem is, the compass is only worthwhile if you built your base of operations near your spawnpoint. For those of us that didn't, it's pretty much useless unless you MCedit your spawnpoint elsewhere.
And Cartographer is a separate program. Not everybody wants to use a third-party program to do it.
Having a worldmap should be a necessity. However, I feel there should be creative ways of doing it.
My concept: Initially, you have to make a map. You would craft nine sheets of paper together and it makes a large map sheet. The map sheet would then go into your inventory until you "use" it (select, right click). When you use it, it automatically is added as a function in your pause menu (OR if you press "M", either one). It would also permanently show on your inventory as a small icon, similar to how your armor is shown on your inventory.
From here, as you walk around, each chunk you enter into would be drawn onto the map... IF you have ink sacs in your inventory. One ink sac would draw a maximum of 5 or 10 chunks onto your map (not sure which I'd want yet), so you'd better go kill a lot of squids! Any chunks you enter into that have changed since last time you were there will automatically update if you have ink in your inventory, but it won't actually USE the ink up.
OPTIONAL #1: To add color, you would take the appropriate dye, then drag it in the inventory onto the map, and anything on the map that uses that color (even just partially) would take it on.
OPTIONAL #2: If you die, you lose the map, but you can thankfully draw a new one from memory. Merely make a new map, use a single ink sac on it, and it draws anything on it that you'd already drawn on it before.
OPTIONAL #3: The map DOESN'T show your PRESENT location/direction... UNLESS you have a compass in your inventory as well.
I plan on putting together some graphics to demonstrate these ideas after I get off work tonight, but for the time being, thoughts?
For one, the suggestions forum isn't about mods. It's about suggestions for permanent updates to the game itself. As someone with 600+ posts here, you really ought to know that.
For two, even if there's a mod that does something similar, I can guarantee it doesn't do what I'm suggesting, and that's probably a big part of why Notch/Mojang hasn't included the concept into the game itself. Most of the time, the reason something fairly obviously a necessity isn't in the game yet has nothing to do with the concept being difficult to implement but more just trying to find the most fitting way TO implement it.
And with that said, I highly doubt you even read what I had to say, because I'm fairly certain you would have grasped that and not posted what you did had you already read it.
