Okay I will admit I doing this out a problem I experienced myself. I do feel this is a good topic to bring up however.
What I would like incorporated:
The ability to open mods like texture packs:
We all know the ability to just select a texture pack and go with it, and some texture packs require a little
more effort but I'll get into that later. What I truly think would be cool is the ability to do this with mods.
For example let's say that the .minecraft folder had a mod sub folder. This makes modding as simple as just adding the mod .RAR or .ZIP and placing it in said folder, going into the game and selecting the mod.
Features:
-The ability to use mods like textures
-auto-install
-minecraft.jar backup
-no more chuck corruption, world loss, or destroyed jars.
problems: I'm a complete idiot when it comes to modding, coding and...well everything to do with the game that doesn't involve messing around with photoshop or something. I'm assuming this would be an extremely hard thing to add to the vanilla version. I also think the first versions would have bugs, and it would require a heck load of testing.
ways to lessen problems:...try to incorporate current modloaders?
Second Idea:
Auto texture patching:
Okay Okay, I'll admit this one isn't that important but I think it'd be helpful and easy as pie (remember...I know maybe enough code to make a text box say 'hello world'...and that's using lolcode)
What it would do is self explanatory, just select the texture pack and BAM! Minecraft updates the texture pack and itself so that the texturepack can be run as soon as you enter the world...it's like an automatic version of the texture patcher.
Problems: May be difficult to impliment, could be buggy, steals the thunder from the person who created the texture patcher, could glitch unexpectedly, may not work with ALL texturepacks, may not allow testing of minecraft.
Solves: Just find a way to have it so selecting a texture pack open's the texture patcher EXE?
Features:
-Allows instant patching of textures.
I'll add more in later (like when I find out how to edit posts) but, just some criticism would be nice.
I like the idea of a mod folder type thing. But for texture packs i cant drag them onto the minecraft thing. So i end up just putting in a folder with minecraft. (not that well thought out of a comment)
The thing is it isn't as easy as just plopping something into the .minecraft folder. Things have to go into certain folders. The .jar, sounds, and others. To have this done would take time!

I know, things belong in certain places but you catch my drift right? Anyways I think this forum can be closed if notch is already thinking of adding mod support. I just wanted this up here for two reasons.
1. to see how many people thought an easier modding system is a need ATM
2. To bring this up here so notch kinda puts it in the priority list, I mean think about it, a lot of things notch may want to add have probably already been covered by a mod...see my point here?

thanks for the clarification.
