I think this is just an excuse to make a paintball gun. Why not just use a paintbrush? There is already colored wool any ways though. And P.S. use the search bar.

The player would make a paint gun by combining metal, red dust and wood.

The player would "load" paint by placing the gun above the paint in the crafting grid.
By right-clicking a loaded paint gun on a block, the player would "paint" that face of the block.
If the player changes the paint color in the gun, the leftover paint goes into their inventory
To "erase" paint, the player would load the paint gun with a bucket of water.
Besides, a paint gun, or any gun, doesnt really fit with minecraft.
