For a while, I've thought Minecraft needs a ghost mob, we have several undead mobs at this point, so I'm thinking its about time that we have a spooky specter of some sort, enter the fallen.
Fallen are mobs baring a transparent steve skin with glowing white eyes like a certain Minecraft superstition we know.
They hold an iron sword in one hand and a shield in the other, they make ghostly, childlike moans, and can see you through any blocks. There attacking pattern revolves around charging in like a zombie, and then taking half the amount of steps back while holding up their shield, and they usually attempt to find an attacking position behind you.
They are undead mobs meaning they can be harmed by the status effect healing, and healed by the status effect harming and are unaffected by regeneration and poison, they also burn in daylight. They are hostile, do 3 damage (without a sword), and have 20 health. They spawn in any biome a zombie or skeleton typically can (in darkness). They drop after death, cursed souls, iron nuggets, and rarely, a used sword or shield.
Cursed souls are the main items dropped by fallen, and have the appearance of an odd, white orb, with a sad looking face on it. When eight cursed souls surround a sand block/dirt block in a crafting table, a soul sand block will be crafted (soul sand crafting use suggested by Cerroz). Cursed souls can also be used as fuel for a cleansing table. when consumed, cursed souls restore a half heart of hunger, and give the nausea affect.
The cleansing table is crafted with, three quartz slabs in the middle, three obsidian blocks in the bottom, and a gold ingot on the top middle. The cleansing table is used to remove enchantments and is fueled by cursed souls just as an enchantment table is by lapis lazuli.
So that's the fallen, thoughts? (All of this is just an idea)
I made a ghost mob model eons ago if you want to use it for this suggestion and it looks like what you want it to.
The mob itself is alright, but it doesn't seem to serve much of a purpose for the player. The drops for this are quite random for a ghost.

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.
To me, the most important part of the description is that it drops Nether Quartz.
This both makes Nether Quartz a renewable resource and allows one to obtain it outside of the Nether.
With this drop: NO SUPPORT
If this drop is removed, there may be possibilities :dunno: ( I don't see a pressing need for more hostile mobs, but YMMV )
NLonForum states they "can see you through any blocks".
How does this work? Does it affect only pathfinding, or can they also move through blocks as typical of literary ghosts? (The latter is overpowered IMO.)
Other than that (possible) issue, at present, they seem too much like either:
A ) a Zombie with different drops that always spawns armed
or
B ) an Overworld Zombe Pigman with different drops, stripped of its swarm attack, but always hostile.

This is a really nice model! It's not really what the fallen would look like though. Also, I agree and i'm trying to think of a better, more useful drop that works well for a ghost. Ectoplasm maybe? If so what could it do? I'm thinking a "cleansing table" that removes enchantments.

This is your suggestion, you gotta come up with the mechanics yourself and not leave blanks for us. Though you did give an idea for the ectoplasm, but still.
Zombies and skeletons are basically the same mob with different weapon use and item drops. "Can see you through blocks" only affects pathfinding.
and also I do want to change the drop to something more ghostly and unique, there is already flesh, bones, so maybe souls?
Again, your idea so you gotta come up with the stuff. It's alright to ask for help, but after you established what the ideas are beforehand.

It's not a solid drop idea, it's only speculation. That's as far as I've thought into the mob, and I'm asking what other people think about it, and how to make it better.

On this forum, you should always have a completed idea. Or completed enough so people can form a solid opinion on it. If you're unsure about something, you should take some extra time to think that out until you are. People probably won't check back on threads just to see if a blank was filled.
Anyway, I don't have any ideas for drop choices or what they do. But if you pick souls as a drop, perhaps combining them with sand will make soul sand?

Good idea ! But the "cleansing table" is a very different idea, so don't mix those up ! (btw it makes me think of a "deal with the devil" feature but here is not the place)
some improvements :
- ghosts can walk through blocks (but the ghost is slow and the player hears an increasing sound when it comes near)
- some ghosts will flee after being hit, so the player will need to dig through obstacles to kill it
Special ideas :
/gamerule KeepInventory ghost : when a player dies, a ghost appears and obtain all his inventory, but weakened (less durability, and in addition the ghost's base strenght is lower than the player's). If the player want to have his items back, he have to find and kill the ghost.
(of course you can still play with keepInventory true or false if you want)

I don't mean to be nitpicky, but it's called a fallen, not a ghost. I think it would be much too overpowered and complicated, The fallen is supposed to be a commonly spawning mob and a counterpart to the zombie and skeleton, this makes them to different to the zombie and skeleton, and too complicated for a basic Minecraft baddie. It doesn't fit with MY vision at least, but it could be a good mod!
Also, the only fuel that I think would work for the cleansing table is cursed souls, nothing else fits as fuel, and I think it's a good use for cursed souls.
For the most part this is a good suggestion, I like the relatively unique look and cleansing table. My bigger problem is this mobs behavior, it functions exactly like a skeleton. Zombies charge at the player at all times, regardless of weapon. Skeletons take their weapon into account (usually bows) when fighting. All the Fallen is right now is a reskinned skeleton spawning with an iron sword. There's a variety of ways to get around this problem:
Make the Fallen much rarer and much stronger, the easiest fix. Perhaps they only spawn deep underground where they have long since forgotten what light looks like. This would also add to the atmosphere and provide challenge for the lower sections of the world (especially considering many simply strip-mine down at diamond layer with no difficulty).
Provide a new unique attack style, which could work with the one below or above. I don't have any exact ideas, but maybe it takes advantage of its ghostly form by moving through blocks? (might get griefy and laggy though). Or it could be invisible apart form its shadow until it takes/deals damage. Or (and if you do this make it neutral and despawning often) it is invincible to most weapons and only slayable through a specifically enchanted sword. I'm not saying any of these ideas should be in the thread, but I think you should come up with something better than just a melee skeleton attack.
Have it inhabit a new structure, like guardians and illagers. You wouldn't need to worry about skeletons or zombies because it would be the main mob. Note that this option would require a large update to your OP with information and likely pictures of what this new structure would have.
But anyway that's just my rambling, its your idea so do whatever you feel suits it best. Right now I think the mob is good, but could use some improvement.

That's a good point, it hadn't clicked with me that they attack in unique ways, I'll try to come up with something.
