I would like to see several more half blocks, similar to the slabs. It would be nice to see half blocks of gravel, dirt, and sand. This would allow for a more even slope in world generation, as well as for building. I have a lot of roadways in my single-player world made of a gravel base with cobblestone walls. The only problem is when the elevation changes. I have to either leave the road as-is, which means jumping up to the higher level, or else use stone slabs to make a smooth transition. The addition of gravel half-blocks would blend in much better. The existing recipes for slabs could be used, with the change of materials.
Also, I would like to see compact stone stairs, in addition to the cobblestone and wooden stairs. In building, the stone stairs would blend in much better with a stone building, instead of having to use cobblestone stairs against the stone blocks. Again, the existing recipes could be used, with only the change of materials.
Would the gravel halfsteps fall? If so, that could lead to some stacking problems due to the falling space being 1 block apart, and you would have gravel halfsteps floating ontop of each other.

Just have it so the gravel/sand slabs merge if they are above the same type of slabs.

Also, this is essentially covered as a subidea of my Complete Block Improvements Guide.
