Nothing is more frustrating than dying somewhere in a cave, and knowing all your stuff is sitting there, and will disappear very soon. Then having to travel great distances to get to the cave, not being able to find where you died, then getting killed by other mobs.
This is so frustrating, if you're carrying lots of good stuff, that it makes you just want to stop playing. This isn't good.
Having the items despawn is very harsh. Instead, I propose, that upon death a "corpse" of your player is created that acts like a chest holding all your items. You cannot put things on the corpse only take them off, and once empty it will disappear. It will not despawn over time.
For anyone who has played any of the Diablo games, think Diablo 2 compared to Diablo 1. Diablo 1 threw your items everywhere like minecraft, but Diablo 2 kept it in corpses.
i can sympathize with you i got creeped and lost like over 20 diamonds ounce but ur suggestion would make the game to easy its like saying some people get mad because they cant find diamonds so they should get them for free if the game was that easy it woulnt be fun
That would be a good addition to multiplayer, because if someone right-clicked the corpse (someone other than the person who left it), you'll see the name of who/what killed it. Kinda like "I killed all these noobs, so GTFO my castle."
I also sympathize, but the solution is actually evident in your post.

Not the best of options to hear, but placing chests at regular intervals helps keep your stuff safe.
putting chests all throughout my caves wouldn't make much sense, as I might not be able to find them all later.
Maybe make it so death takes durability off items, and decreases the amount of material in each stack so there is still a penalty. But making it all disappear if you can't find it fast enough basically means all the work you did in the cave is wasted. Which is way too harsh. when that happens I usually never go into the cave again. It's just a wast of time, it's mostly all mined out, and you didn't get to keep any of it because a giant slime killed you in 3 hits or w/e it was. I shouldn't have tried to kill it with a porkchop in retrospect.
I agree there should be consequences for death. But I feel that everything is a bit much.
Another Idea, would be to create the corpse, let it disappear after a while, but have some kind of corpse compass that points you to your corpse. I usually die when I'm lost, making it doubly hard to find my stuff.

You don't "lose" anything. You just have to maneuver better to get your stuff back. IMHO, I think that the current death system should be in place on easy, on peaceful this corpse system could be implemented, and on normal and hard there should be a a certain percent of your items that should auto-despawn. Being able to get everything back makes it so you can march into caves without being scared at all, which is contrary to how it should be.

you do lose everything if you die while lost. Or die trying to get your corpse. Everything despawns.
On that note, I have tried a couple "breadcrumb" techniques in the past (using sand with torches.) but I've found redstone torches work really nicely. Tried them after I died while lost :tongue.gif:
On another note. This game is buggy (still in beta so what should I expect right?). I occasionally have crashes while in a cave. When logging back in, the cave is reset (or a large part of it.) leaving me in the dark, and lost. Lost because 1) my breadcrumbs are gone. and 2) everything is dark, lava back to liquid, stairs I made are gone, and I'm now viewing the untouched cave from an angle I never viewed it before.
This usually makes me resort to digging a vertical shaft out and start again from the entrance. This is rather frustrating, this is usually how I get lost, and currently if I die when this happens, it feels like I lose my items due to the crashing bug since that's how I got lost in the first place.
The plus side of the crashing is I keep what I had mined before the reset, then get to go mine it out again. So theoretically double the diamonds. I just need to resort to the vertical shaft, or switching to peaceful when it crashes and resets on me. Although peaceful (aka. "Carebear") still feels like cheating to me :tongue.gif:

For now there's a mod that makes a chest with all your items when you die you can use. I'm not sure if it's updated or not.

mabye 3-4 minecraft days.
and after the corpse turns to a skeleton all of the items pop out of it and then eventually despawn normally.
yesh Yesh YESH!!!!
