Searched this, got a bunch of crap about gears of war and mirrors :\
Anyway, redstone is incapable of going up more than a 45 degree angle, so, if gears were to be reintroduced, they would be a vertical means of transferring energy (up 90 degree angles-in this case walls).
Instead of redstone there were going to be gears, but then we got redstone. The gears were going to only work on walls too.
Though the redstone torch way is easy I like the idea of gears.

How would you activate the gears? Still using a restone circuit to the first gear?
Considering this would be used for specifically moving redstone energy up, I'd say I'd rather have it work when I want it to.
Well, I was wondering, how would we efficiently transfer redstone energies into kinetic energy? I think for that, we would need a transformer/motor block, which would thus take redstone energy and turn it into kinetic energy, to move the gears, and those gears would need a second transformer to turn the kinetic energy into redstone.

Comments?
The RS Torch powers the block, the block powers the torch on it, and so on.
Hope it goes well for you, I obviously like it :smile.gif:

And I wonder if the Gear would be it's own standing block or it would attach to other blocks.

Yes, but the solution is not elegant.
