Okay, so I came up with two ideas for a firearm using the existing materials/mechanics of the game. I am still tinkering with them; they are by no means complete ideas, but here they are:
*****THE FIREARM BASICS*****
Flint-lock pistol: created on a workbench using 3 iron for the barrel, 1 wooden plank for the handle and 1 flint&steel at the trigger, arranged in this 3x2 fashion
"Revolver": While I have not actually decided on what to call this particular firearm, I think that having it just look like a revolver would be nice. It is composed in the same 3x2 fashion to the above flint pistol, except using redstone dust at the trigger rather than Flint&Steel.
(substituting gunpowder smiley for redstone smiley. lack of redstone smiley makes me sad...)
Of course, the option to have both builds in the game and have them be exactly the same (see coal and charcoal) is always there. That way, you can make either one based on your preference. Just a thought.
*****THE FIREARM MECHANICS*****
The firearm itself would have no damage rating, although you could use it to pistolwhip mobs like you do with the bow. The damage is provided by the ammo.
As far as firing ammo (covered below) is concerned, I believe that the firearm should function much like a bow except removing the arc and be subject to weapon/tool degradation like swords/axes/shovels. To that end, I am debating whether or not it would be a good idea to have firearms crafted from multiple materials instead of just iron (example, 3 diamond = diamond flint lock) While hilarious and cool, I am concerned about the aforementioned diamond firearm being too durable/OP. Of course, the option to go James Bond on everyone with gold firearms is very tempting...
One thing that will probably be needed is some sort of firing delay, that way we don't have arrow spam in the form of bullets. This is especially important since the sound effect for firing shots would be an explosion, and thus spamming bullets might crash people's soundcards or something.
*****THE AMMO BASICS*****
Okay, now for constructing the ammo... My recipe is similar to the arrow, in that it is crafted on a workbench and arranged in a 3x1 array using Flint, Gunpowder and Iron. This is mostly because I feel that Flint is wholly underused and wanted to make it more useful.
This would yeild 2 bullets per output. I was also thinking of a similar, flint-free recipe that outputs the same result but I scrapped it. The ability to make bullets with the same ease as torches seems a little... unbalancing.
*****THE AMMO MECHANICS*****
I probably put more thought into this singular paragraph than the rest of my post, since this is where my idea will make or break the game.
As far as stacking the ammo goes, I think that stacks of 16, like snowballs and eggs, is perfectly fine. This will prevent the hoarding of potentially gamebreaking amounts of ammo. For damage, I see maybe a 50% increase over arrows. The bullets themselves would be non-recoverable, like skeleton arrows. Once you shoot them, they are gone.
*****THE SUMMARY*****
Firearm(s): More costly to build than swords and bows, degrade over time. I think this works but what do you all think?
Ammo: I think that the cons (3 input ---> 2 output, non-recoverable, aggressive stack limitations) balances out the pros (more damage, non-arcing)
Please discuss whether or not this is a good idea and if not, help refine it to the point where it would be a good idea. Thank you all for your time.
Idea is simple, looks like a gun, and technically could work. But lets stray away from normal gun designs as they are unappealing in Minecraft. Think about the problems that would arise if the Minecraft player could hold a gunlike object at other players. A kids game no longer is a kids game anymore.

Yeah, the search bar was the first thing I did. I saw how bad they were and thought that I could do better. Then just maybe it wouldn't get shot down miserably. Was it wrong of me to think this way?
Also, I read your sig, taskmaster, and you have a typo in it. "posting" not "postig."
