Automatically senses enemy mobs via compass technology attached to the back of a dispenser which auto locks onto them on it's stand made of sticks and fires arrows (or whatever it's loaded with) at 3 rounds per minute with deadly accuracy. No longer must you be constantly pestered by mobs during the night (given you have a sufficient stock of arrows), and forced to switch to peaceful, taking away a large component of the game and many items.
It wouldn't ruin the game, it would eat up arrows pretty fast for a trade off, but it would make many parts of the game less unnecessarily frustrating, and it's always a nice and satisfying feeling to know somethings got your back. Don't give me this **** about guns in minecraft, this uses arrows, so stfu.
And you can't pick up the arrows it shoots either, making them hard to take care of early in the game.
Wouldn't it be better to make a pet that doesn't despawn, walks towards enemies it sees, and is in a glass cage with pressure plates that tell which direction it is walking towards?

No? There are no items currently that swivel and react with redstone, so that wouldn't work, unless Notch implements some confusing way to do that. And there are no mobs that don't despawn either.
