They could be RPG-styled bars, numbers, or in some other forms. They should be toggle-able too. They are somewhat pointless for the current mobs there are, but I think they will be more useful with the introduction of bosses in the (hopefully not too far) future, or with mobs that can regenerate health (if any).
I can't decide on the style to use, or even if it's a good idea or not, so any constructive feedback is very much appreciated.
There are two different approaches to the implementation.
1. Conventional bar/number
This would be a bar/number on top of each mod to show their health, just like in any RPG. They would be optional, and even if turned on, would only show when a mob's health is not full, or temporarily when damage is received.
Pros:

Cons:
[*:3na5wglj]May be distracting/view-obstructing
[*:3na5wglj]Disrupts the general atmosphere of the game
2. Alternative textures
The texture of mobs change to reflect the health level of mobs.
Pros:

[*:3na5wglj]Doesn't disrupt the stealthiness of mobs
Cons:
[*:3na5wglj]Potentially disturbing to some players (imagine a creeper covered with green blood )
[*:3na5wglj]The need for additional texture means more work for mod makers and custom skin makers
[*:3na5wglj]Reduced compatibility with mods

Air-dropped bombs come in 3 flavours, distinguished by their intelligence: smart, dumb and retarded.
What could be better is instead of health bars they had a different skin for each stage of harm. so full health is normal skin, halfwayish different, darker/bloodier (i don't know, someone else suggest what the skins should look like), and finally at 1 hearts or so, a final, beat up skin, to show it'll die soon.
That means health bars wouldn't get in the way, but you can tell at a glance how hurt they are.
The different skin would be the coolest one, normal to 50%, hurt to 25% and messed up to 0%.
Anyway for a health display it should be toggle-able, probably by a special item like a watch that displays a color depending on the health of the mob/player in front of you.
Like watch does for day / night and a compass does for direction to your spawn.
Probably something like this...
