I have an alternative for the sailboat crafting recipe. It is similiar to that of the minecart. It resembles the shape and you would be able to customize the sails. Do you approve? You can double the boats and banner if it is too cheap.

I like this, but I think my recipe makes more sense since the sailboat is longer than the rowboat.
True, but you should still be able to customize it with banners. Maybe 3 boats to 2 banners or whatever ratio you propose. Otherwise full support.
Maybe something like this:
I'll add this in as an alternate recipe. I like your idea of customizing it with banners; this way you could make little "war" sailboats. Also note that I present ideas for larger boats in Part 3 of Ocean Improvements.
Yes, I definitely support the idea to "make oceans great again ®", while making them more engaging as well.
But I do have some thoughts on sailboats.
Firstly, they should be big, otherwise they wouldn't be just used to navigate where they're intended to, seas and oceans, but also rivers and creeks. Maybe at least twice as big, this way "rowboats" wouldn't be immediately rendered obsolete if sailboats get implemented.
Secondly, (row)boats break way too easily. I like the idea of having a chest on you on sailboats, it would be quite practical and would make a lot of sense for the sailboat concept, but then sailboats should be made much sturdier than regular boats (at least with respect to squid collisions). If sailboats were to break just as easily, chests would be too much of a nuisance to be useful in the first place.
Thirdly, how about furnace boats? Seriously, hear me out. We could have furnace boats (crafted analogously to furnace minecarts) and they could be attachable to regular (row or sail) boats to make them 25% faster or something like that. So massive oceans could be navigated at huge speeds, but at a cost.

As of the most recent update, (row)boats don't break when contacting blocks or lily pads.
The sailboat is intended to be a faster version of the boat that traverses thin rivers or short routes. While it could be used for crossing an entire ocean, it would be more efficient if a player-built ship was used. In Part 3 of Ocean Improvements, I explain my idea for ships that are built by the player.
I would recommend that you check out Part 3 (click here) of my Ocean Improvements suggestion. This is only part one.
Also, nice poem! It was very creative and fun to read.

I didn't even know that (row)boats got sturdier, this is good news.
Anyway, one of the things that I liked the most about the sailboat idea is diversity. I imagined sailboats to be cumbersome, hard to maneuver and accelerate, but resilient and capable of achieving great speeds as well as storing items, whereas rowboats would be weaker and slower, but easier to maneuver and accelerate. No boat type would be absolutely better than the other, but each would have its pros and cons. Each one more useful than the other depending on the context (rowboats for navigating narrow bodies of water, like rivers and creeks, sailboats for navigating long distances).
Updates which surpass previous items in all aspects are boring, they don't add to the game's complexity. If the new sailboat is better in than rowboats in every way, it's equivalent to saying "ok, from now on this is the new boat and this is its recipe", it feels much more like a replacement than actually adding something.
(thanks for the compliment, it took me longer to come up with that than I'd like to admit )

You are very right! I thought about this while writing this suggestion, so I wrote in that the sailboat would take time to reach full speed to keep the rowboat still useful in some instances. You made a great point with maneuverability; I think I'll add to the post that sailboats are more difficult to turn.

Yesterday, all landmasses seemed so far away,
Now it looks like land all the way
Oh I believe in yesterday.
Suddenly, oceans are half what they used to be.
Boats have no more purpose to me.
Oh yesterday came suddenly.
Where did the water go?
I don't know, it faded away
Now it feels wrong
And I long for yesterday!
Yesterday sailing was such a hard game to play
Now I just ride pigs all day
Oh I believe in yesterday
Why? Was there a drought?
I don't know, It's hard to say.
It is not my fault,
But I'm out, I'll sail awa-aay!
Yesterday oceans didn't have temples to pray
But I pray oceans are big one day
As I believe were yesterday!
Now in all seriousness...

Cool! Can you pick up the sailboat, or does it get destroyed upon taking damage?
I never thought about that. I guess so to be consistent with current boats, but it would take more hits than a normal boat to break.
