My suggestion for Minecraft would be that during thunderstorms, tall metal objects, such as a tower of Iron, Gold, Diamond, or Emerald blocks, have a higher chance of being struck by lightning. This would increase the risk of building such things, and also may add purpose for a block that converts lightning into Redstone power? A lightning rod? Please tell me what you think.
EDIT: People have pointed out that Emerald and Diamond aren't palpable conductors of electricity, however I wanted to have new people who come to the thread understand the argument so that they could contribute. I do not think that the Emerald and Diamond would be useful, as they are too rare and expensive to use for a lightning attracting purpose.
(THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SUGGESTION) I actually suggested this to Notch through an e-mail before (before Microsoft's acquisition) and to probably no ones surprise, I didn't get a response. I discovered this handy little suggestions board, so I decided to suggest this for old times sake, and I must say I didn't think it would get this popular. (2 pages of comments!) Thanks everyone.
I know this, but were talking about Minecraft here, Emerald and Diamond can power Beacons, so in Minecraft's world we cant be so sure that it wouldn't work right?

Beacons are magical. Electricity (such as lightning) is not the same as magic.

Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
It's unlikely that either of them would be good for conducting electricity. The Wikipedia article for Lightning Rods says that most lightning rods are made out of materials like copper or aluminum. Since Minecraft has neither copper or aluminum in the Vanilla game, Gold might be the best bet for a conductive material. (Of course, if Minecraft ever gets copper or aluminum, this would be a great use for the material!)
Now, this feature could be used for:
- Gold Farms (Breed pigs, strike with lightning to make Zombie Pigmen, kill and reap rewards.)
- Charged Creeper Farms (To get mob heads. If this suggestion ever gets added into the game, the passive mobs and Nether mobs should have heads in the game by default...)
- Witch Farms (Which in turn translates to Glowstone and Redstone farms. A Glowstone farm could be useful on a server who's Nether has been explored and mined over a long period of time.)
- Skeleton Trap Farms (Although I'm not sure why you'd want one, considering a regular mob farm could give you skeleton bones. This would be more of a side benefit if anything.)

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
I wouldn't think that real life sciences would apply to Minecraft, after all, you have dragons, floating islands, Creepers, and other things that aren't possible in real life.
However I do see your logic and I may remove the Emerald and Diamond from the suggestion.

The thing about lightning is that it has some very interesting effects on mobs (turning pigs into zombie pigmen, powering creepers etc), but the chance of it actually striking a mob within range of a player is practically one in a bajillion. This suggestion would allow you to harness lightning (to some extent), and actually makes mob heads not impossible to get, while still keeping it rare and expensive.
Just as a thought, wouldn't Redstone blocks also make a good lightning conductor?

Redstone blocks are basically a bunch of redstone dust compressed down. I don't think piles of dust make very good conductors.
Erm... Redstone as a wire is dust. The dust is what's conducting the electricity. Sure, it loses it's charge after a mere 15 meters, but the dust works as a wire. (I think the redstone blocks would actually make better conductors, because they'd be more solid like actual wire.)

Redstone power isn't electricity though, it's a different kind of power source. One that just never appeared very conductive to me,
I'm pretty sure there are forum threads on top of forum threads debating whether or not Redstone is electricity. There are good points to either side, but I don't know how far we could really discuss this without getting offtopic.

Yeah, lets try and get back on track.
If lightning attracting structures can already be built out of iron and gold, I don't think redstone blocks are all that needed. I think people generally have more iron than redstone anyways. But I guess it's up to the author to decide whether or not redstone blocks would also conduct electricity, it can really go either way.
Yeah. (Maybe just gold blocks though? Iron has plenty of uses, gold doesn't have quite as many.)

I would love to see lightning rods added to the game both as a way to get lightning to strike mobs and as a way to generate redstone current. I can't imagine how the redstone current could be used, but I'm sure someone will find a way to make it useful.
Actually, I thought of a use: make a set of noteblocks that plays Toccata every time lightning strikes the rod that starts it. Then put that in the back of your ominous castle!

Even in a fantasy game you want some logical structure. Realism is fine as long as it doesn't affect gameplay or dampen any experience or theme a game has. The idea is fine only for the actual metals.

emerald and diamond are not metals.
Yes, it would be a good feature being added into the game, but, I'm not sure it lightning would actually strike Gold, Diamond or Emerald IRL tho

I'm not sure about Diamond or Gold But as Mastermined said, Gold IS more conductive than iron.

For the curious ones:
Emerald is made of Beryl and colored green by trace amounts of chromium and vanadium.
Diamonds are made of Carbon, and are made blue by traces of Boron. (Interestingly enough, Wikipedia says that Blue Diamonds are semiconductors, like Silicon.)

I like this idea, tired of my house roof being set ablaze We have to set iron fence all over the top to keep it from getting struck.
