I've read another Forum with the suggestion for Foxes, and commented on it a couple of times too, but I haven't seen it getting anywhere. So I decided Why not try this for myself? So here's my idea for Foxes in Minecraft!
New Mobs: Red Foxes, Grey Foxes, (Edit) Arctic Foxes and (Edit) Kitsunes.
Spawn areas: Red and Grey Foxes have an equal chance of spawning in Forest Biomes; (Edit) Arctic Foxes spawn in Snow Biomes; (Edit) Kitsunes spawn in the Nether in and around lava.
Items dropped by the Mobs: (Massive edit) Fur would be an item dropped by all foxes, while Kitsune tails would only be dropped by it's namesake, the Kitsune. You can use the Kitsune tails and fur to craft hoods. Put the fur in the normal five places you'd put for a regular helmet and the tails all along the bottom. This will make a regular Red Fox hood.
Put grey dye in the center to get a Grey Fox hood.
The Arctic-fox hood would have a block of snow in the center.
The Kitsune hood would be crafted with Blaze Powder in the center.
All hoods provide night vision when the player is within 8 blocks of any fox.
Pelts would be a new decoration block. The crafting recipe would be three fur across in a crafting table, with the texture of it being randomly one of the five Foxes upon placing it down(Paintings anyone?). You can hang it on a wall or have it lying across the floor.
Mob Behavior: Foxes would be scavengers by default, and when their around would attack Rabbits and Chickens,(Edit) and pigs if in groups of two or three. They will pick up any dropped items they happen upon along the way, holding up to a maximum of one. The only way to be able to tame them would be to use Raw Rabbit or (Edit) Chicken. Each time you try has a 50% chance of working. They will run away from you if you don't have either of these items. (Edit)
When tamed they will bring the items they pick up to the player and drop them before looking around for more.
Edit: All untamed over-world Foxes will run away from tamed Wolves, forcing you to leave them behind if you're searching for a new pet. They will become passive to each other once tamed.
Edit: The behavior of the Kitsune is very different from it's over-world counterparts, with it avoiding water(Which would cause it damage) and being aggressive towards Blazes. To tame it, you need Blaze Rods, with a 25% chance of taming it each time you try. It will not willingly enter the over-world without being tamed by a player. It will be neutral to all mobs in the Nether(Aside from the Blaze) unless they attack it or the player if they tamed it. This mob would take no fire damage. When in the Over-world, it will act like a regular Fox, though Snow Golems will be openly hostile to it, with it doing the same in turn.(Edit) When it bites a player, it sets them on fire.
Edit: Mob Sounds: (New edit) The sounds of the foxes would be somewhere in the range of particularly 1:10 through 2:06.
Mob Texture: For Red Foxes, I would go with the classic look of them having black paws, a red body, a white tip on their tail, and a white tuft of fur sticking out beneath their head on their neck and going along the stomach.
For Grey Foxes, it would keep the white fur on the neck and stomach, while changing everything red to grey, with the exception of the fur lining the sides of the stomach, which would stay red; The tail would have a black tip instead of white, with the ears turned black as well.
The Arctic Foxes would be all white fur, and have the same sizing as the Red and Grey Foxes.
(Edit) Kitsunes would be a sort of Netherack color all over, with the exception of the regular white tuft at the neck and along the stomach, and have three tails instead of one.
After being tamed, they would get Black Collars around their necks, which are dyeable just like Dog Collars.
Edit: Leatherworker Villagers would trade 6-8 Fox fur for 2-3 Emeralds, and would give you one of the five fox hoods for 1-2 Emeralds.
So, tell me what you think, what you like, what you hate, all that jazz, and remember, #FOXESFORMINECRAFT
Hmm... I guess it wouldn't make any sound. Or I guess it could say 'Hatee-hatee-hatee-ho! Hatee-hatee-hatee-ho! Hatee-hatee-hatee-ho!' But the next big question is: WHAT DOES THE FOX SAY?!?!
No really. Would it have the sounds of the wolf or what?
In the game it would make sense to use wolf sounds for simplicity's sake, but in real life foxes have a wide variety of sounds. Just search for different kinds of fox sounds if you need a demonstration.

Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
I can remember from when I was young I would hear foxes at night, I'm pretty sure they made a screaming noise which sounds like a girl screaming. But they may scare younger kids... Good suggestion by the way. Perhaps foxes could drop fox hide which you could create a sought of helmet/hood with.
And with the weak enchantments I made for it, it makes it slightly more desirable than Leather Armor, but still not as good as iron. Besides, who wouldn't want a mob that cleaned up after you, and brought you the valuable stuff you might have missed?
you can add a rarer and/or Nether-spawning variant of fox: the Kitsune (or Nine Tails Fox). You can tame it with Blaze Powders and it will act like a wolf, but its attacks will set targets on fire. If it dies it can drop Kitsune Tails, which can be used to give temporary speed, strength, and fire resistance (kind of like a Golden Apple).
Anyways I think your idea to put foxes into Minecraft is very amazing.
Hmm... Not a half-bad idea. However, it's behavior would have to be drastically different from the over-world mobs. If there's going to be a Nether variant, I'd have to make some changes to it's behavior to differentiate it from regular Foxes. I'll see what I can come up with.
Just edited the original post! Go and see for yourself the changes.
I've read another Forum with the suggestion for Foxes, and commented on it a couple of times too, but I haven't seen it getting anywhere. So I decided Why not try this for myself? So here's my idea for Foxes in Minecraft! This better not be a Wolf Clone in order for me to support.
New Mobs: Red Foxes, Grey Foxes, Fennec Foxes, Arctic Foxes and (Edit) Kitsunes. Okay, I guess..
Spawn areas: Red and Grey Foxes have an equal chance of spawning in Forest and Plains Biomes; Fennec Foxes spawn in Desert and Savanna Biomes; Arctic Foxes spawn in Snow Biomes; (Edit) Kitsunes spawn in the Nether. Mmmkay...
Items dropped by the Mobs: I was thinking that a couple of new items, like Fur and Claws could be dropped by all Foxes, and the fur being unique to each Fox Eh... No. We don't need 5 types of fur any more than we need leather for every animal or colored sticks. Too much creative inventory spam. and used to craft pre-enchanted armor Yeah... Uh... Notice how nothing else has this ability, besides Enchanted Books on an Anvil?, with the enchantments only working when you have a full set(Note: All have the same base defense as Leather Armor). Wait... That's not how normal enchants work... For Red and Grey Foxes, it would just have Protection 1; for Fennec Foxes, the armor would give you Feather Falling 2; Arctic Fox armor would give you Water Breathing 2; and lastly, (Edit) Kitsune armor would give you Fire Resistance 2. Water Breathing and Fire Resistance aren't enchantments. Did you mean Respiration and Fire Protection?
The claws would be used to craft variants on the normal tools, as well as to craft Bone Meal when used alone. Perhaps have the tools be as good as stone, and have the Enchantment Fortune 1 for Pickaxe, Efficency 2 for both Shovel and Axe, and Sharpness 1 for the sword. The Hoe is irrelevant in this context. We do not need another tier of tools. Besides that, the only thing Fortune is good for on a tool as good as stone is Coal.
Another item that would be dropped only by Kitsunes would be Kitsune Tails that can be used to make fire-resistance potions and also cooked to let you eat it and gain Speed and Haste potion effects for 45 seconds. No. No mini-potion foods. Ever. There is a reason potions aren't stackable.
Mob Behavior: Foxes would be scavengers by default, and when their around would attack Sheep, Pigs, Rabbits, and Chickens, as well as pick up any dropped items they happen upon along the way. The only way to be able to tame them would be to use Raw Rabbit or Rabbit's Foot. Each time you try has a 50% chance of working. They will run away from you if you don't have either of these items. When tamed you will be able to access a sort of menu that has the items they store away by clicking on them with a Rabbit's foot when tamed. They will not attack Mobs for you and will run away from Creepers, but they will collect dropped items and bring them back to you. That's actually pretty useful, I just don't really see it being very Fox-like. I also like that you didn't make them a Wolf-clone. Could I also tame them with feathers, though? Feathers have almost no use when you kill enough skeletons to have double-chests of arrows.
Edit: The behavior of the Kitsune is very different from it's over-world counterparts, with it avoiding water(Which would cause it damage) and being openly hostile to players in the Nether. When it attacks it causes whatever it bites to burst into flames as well. The only way to make this mob neutral to you is to wear a pumpkin on your head. To tame it, you need Blaze Rods, with a 25% chance of taming it each time you try. It will not enter the over-world without being tamed by a player. It will not store items for you however, and will only attack Silverfish, Spiders and Skeletons, openly running from all other hostile mobs. I don't really think I'd use this guy a lot. Silverfish are annoying, but you just have to pile up two blocks and hit them from above.
Edit: Mob Sounds: For simplicity's sake, it would make the sounds of a wolf, with a yapping noise for whenever it's 'chest' is full.
(I think foxes should sound like a 5-year old girl with a violent sinus infection that constantly techno-blabbers and talks to an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog... Don't you? :3)
For Fennec Foxes, I would have the model be all sand colored fur, with the white tuft at the neck and along the stomach, with a slightly smaller body than the other Foxes, and bigger ears.
The Arctic Foxes would be all white fur, and have the same sizing as the Red and Grey Foxes.
(Edit) Kitsunes would be a sort of Netherack color all over, with the exception of the regular white tuft at the neck and along the stomach, and have three tails instead of one. I know there's some kind of Japanese lore, but I feel like any more than 2 tails is overkill.
After being tamed, they would get Black Collars around their necks, which are dyeable just like Dog Collars.
For a hostile version of the Mob, I was thinking that it would spawn underground in caves and give weakness and slowness when it bites you. It's texture would be Black like an Enderman, with red eyes and neon red splotches on it.
So, tell me what you think, what you like, what you hate, all that jazz. #FOXESFORMINECRAFT
No Support.
Now, I like the idea of a tamable mob that picks things up, because that would be much less laggier than a bunch of hoppers and much more versatile than a hopper minecart on a track. But, I wouldn't really connect a fox with that job. Maybe an ant, though. (And it works out well because we already have giant spiders.)
As for the rest of the suggestion, I feel like it's kinda meh. I don't think foxes should drop things that can craft enchanted items, if only because nothing else in the game does that. (Besides Enchanted Books, but those only work on an anvil.) I also don't think that Foxes should kill off everything that isn't a cow, maybe just Chickens or Rabbits.

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
Okay then... I see some good points made in there. However, on the subject of Kitsune tails, in Japanese lore they have 9 tails at most and have a thing for fire(Pokemon Ninetails!). 3 tails is a much more reasonable amount then having to model nine apendages sticking out of a mobs rear.
The five types of fur was to distinguish between the different types, like how there's so many types of wool. I was thinking that it would be kinda like that, but I guess it makes sense to only have one fur. Maybe I should do something else for the recipe... And the pre-enchantments would be because of the nature of how foxes in Japanese lore are always magic ones. But the complete set being needed to have the enchantment... Not my best moment. I may have to change it up a little after I finish this.
Claws were put in there just to add something extra to it. Hmm... Perhaps I should change it to being just a sword that has the damage of Iron and durability of wood? Claws are what Foxes and Wolves use to attack stuff, so why not be able to use it yourself, eh? And a block would probably be good too... Very good. Just as an alternate crafting to Bone blocks maybe.
Hey, you have to take a trip to the Nether to get the Kitsune tails! Then you have to cook them too, though I guess editing the potion effect would be nice... Haste and Blindness perhaps? Kitsune tails are supposed to be the source of a Kitsune's power. I think....
For the mob behavior, Foxes are regularly opportunistic creatures, and will take chances they get to attack poultry and small livestock, so I guess it should just be Chickens and Pigs they attack. And since they're opportunistic, it makes sense that they would 'steal' dropped items.
Hmm... Yeah, Kitsune behavior does seem rather boring compared to the rest. Perhaps I should just make it so that it attacks Nether mobs, and acts like a regular Fox in the Over-world. Wouldn't it be useful to have a companion that's fire-proof to help you out in the Nether? I guess it would also have high attack damage against Zombie Pigman too, considering prior statement of Foxes targeting pigs. I'll need to sort this out when I edit the post.
What about needing to coat the Kitsune tail in gold? That's how most magic foods work anyway, and it could be a little bit more consistent.

Hmm... True. However, Kitsunes are already magical creatures. Making it so that you have to coat the tail in gold to get the effects wouldn't be the best thing ever. However, to change what effects the Kitsune tails give you, perhaps have it be put in a crafting table with, say, a feather, and you would get 20 seconds of swiftness when you eat it. Or perhaps a gold ingot, and you would get regeneration for 20 seconds. How does that sound?

Hmm... Then maybe just have for when you eat uncooked ones, you get slowness, but when it's cooked, it gives you haste as well, while still keeping slowness. Eh?
