It gets really annoying having people taking all of my stuff from my chest once I leave a server on SMP. I had a great idea on a way to fix this! I know it's been suggested before, but hear me out. I think i've nailed this! You should be able to craft a lock. It would go something like this: ---- -or-
[] [] ---- [] []
the player right clicks a door or chest to place the lock.
once placed, the player has to enter a 4-digit code. you can't change the lock's code once it's been placed. then, you craft a key. it would look kinda like this: [] ---- [] [] [] -or - [] [] [] [] ---- [] []
or something along those lines. once made, you must enter a 4-digit code for that key. You should be able to name keys to avoid confusion. a key can only unlock locks with the same 4-digit code as the key you're using. that way, you don't need a new key for every chest or door. you can craft a keyring to hold your keys and you right click while holding the keyring to select a key. then, next time you right click with it or switch items, it goes back to the keyring so you can select again. you can place locks on doors and chests. When you unlock a door or chest, the lock should pop off the object towards the player so that he can lock it again or leave it unlocked.
...don't play on a PvP server, or a server with a lot of untrustworthy people. And the bukkit mods and other things allow chest protection and unauthorized entries for some places.
I support this item idea... And let me explain before I get flamed.
When you have more than one person on the same computer, everyone can access the saves... And a "friend" logged in and TNT'd my house. Oh yeah, did I mention he videoed it?
SO! I could lock my chests or doors and put the keys in a secure location.

It would be entirely useless in Single Player, though.
unless H3r0b1nez comez and takes all of your stuff while u were sleeping!!!
:Diamond:H TEH N0EZ!!!
Locks would be useless in SSP.
So why add more unnecessary items?
