Not ALL sounds come from the server - minecarts, for example, make sound when created on the client, but have no sound effects server-side at all. That makes this system unreliable. NO SUPPORT
I think it'd be interesting (if annoying to the trap designer) if the sound detector was affected by weather. Thus it'd hear rain and emit a low level signal such as strength 1 or 2. Thunder would give it spikes of a stronger signal (still not 100% though) possibly up to 5-7 for nearby strikes.
A side benefit of this would be using the sound detector to detect weather.
Introducing the Sound Detector! 1.13 Update It's a good thing we got DogeMaster10 on Mojang's scheduling team... Not.
Please, for the sake of sounding serious, don't add an update number to your suggestion. It makes it sound more like a click-bait Youtube video title than anything else.
This can make your trap deadlier and nobody with ever mess with you again!
HOW IT WORKS Goodness sakes! Please don't use bright red text, it makes my eyes bleed.
Sound Detectors work like daylight sensors but will emit a redstone signal depending on how close a near sound is
I suppose this can work, you just have to create some kind of object that measures distance between it and all sound detectors within a certain radius that appears whenever a sound plays.
WHAT DOES ITDO
Sound Detectors will listen for sound 24/7 so when a mob comes, your mob-arrow trap with be in action!
Simple enough.
WHAT SOUNDS DOES ITDETECT
Incase you didn't know, the closer the sound detector is to an entity, the more sensitive it is.
HOW FAR CAN IT HEAR?
It can hear about 15 blocks away
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE
Since this was inspired by the Daylight Sensor, it looks and has a similar crafting recipe
HOW DO YOU CRAFT IT?
It's crafted with 3 glass blocks, 2 observers, 1 jukebox, and 3 wooden slabs. I've included an attachment showing how to make it at the bottom
Using a jukebox is expensive, how about a noteblock, or something else related to sound within the game?
WHAT SOUND DETECTOR FROM ~15 BLOCKS CAN HEAR:
-Mob Sounds
-Blocks Destroyed
-Blocks Placed Blocks Destroyed and Blocks Placed could get out of hand if someone is using an Efficiency V Diamond Pick with a Haste II Beacon in order to instamine. Maybe skip these?
-Jukeboxes
-Button / Lever pressing
-Putting Armor on Person or Horse
-Horse galloping
-Pistons
-Water Flow
-Lava Flow
-Bows being shot
-Potions being thrown
WHAT SOUND DETECTOR FROM ~5 BLOCKS CAN HEAR:
-Mob Walking / Moving
-Bouncing off of slime blocks
-Taking armor off armor stands
-Sponges being used
-Expirence gained Could get pretty hectic if someone nearby throws a lot of XP potions.
-Animals being harmed
-Arrows landing
-Snowballs being thrown
-All of the above including things it can hear from far away
Sound Detectors won't be able to hear crouching and throwing items other then right clicking with a splash potion

Mostly Support.
I support the idea of a Sound Detector, but it shouldn't detect easily repeatable sounds, just in case you've hooked up the sound detector to some elaborate piston contraption that causes decent amounts of lag.

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.

Hey, woah. This is a text box. Not sure what it's doing here... so, just ignore it... (lol)
The issue is that it would have to detect every block within a 31x31x31 radius for that to work. That would be much too laggy in some cases.
Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
