The aestethic of the Nether is really cool and I don't think it would benefit that muchly from the addition of any more blocks being added ALONE. Maybe a couple of more enemies would be cool, though, but I digress. I for one think the Nether is kind of right now because (for those of us who didn't INVedit it, or rather for those of YOU), we/you put in all that effort just for some wilderness of fire and brimstone and deth.
What about lots, and lots of mobs, maybe not as strong as on the surface, and a lot more varied? They freely roam the land but zombie/pigmen have bastions throughout. By bastions I mean little towers or forts. This may seem pretty damn complex but if you made the pigmen superpassive and programmed them to just inhabit the bastions instead of defend it.etc it would be a lot simpler. That being said, it would be cool to get the zombie pigmen to fight the mobs when they come in close contact. For instance, you'll have all of your pigmen in the bastion, wandering about, and then a couple of them accidentally end up finding the exit and strolling outside. They find a zombie or whatever and start a fight. But only pigmen in their chunk and the chunk adjacent to them start fighting.
So these would probably be made of cobblestone walls, with floors of wood (preferably darker than normal) and plenty of swag locked away in chests inside. Swag like swords, arrows, armour, zombie porkchops? Though the latter may infer that they are cannibals...hurm. Anyway, I don't know much about programming and coding and whatnot but I'm guessing that the easiest thing to do would be to define what a bastion will look like (i.e. make a model, like what they do for dungeons (?) ) and then set parameters as to where they would appear, so that they wouldn't be appearing in mid air or in tight crevasses.
However, if it was just castles and fighting it would be quite ridiculous. As I said earlier, new blocks wouldn't be bad it's just they can't justify the Nether as a whole. That's why I reckon the nether should have more caves. From what I've experienced, the Nether is largely composed of massive catacombs full of lava and stuff. I reckon cave systems, akin to those on the surface, or maybe a little more interlinked, would be epic if they had decent things to mine in them, at the cost of more mobs.
The neather is cool enough, but how about some newer mobs, or a unique resource that makes it worthwhile to visit the neather? Right now all i use it for is a mine track to a distant base...
