I was pondering the compass and beds systems, did me a quick search and found this:

Another thing that I think about when I'm exploring, equally with respawning issues, is how hard it is to find your way back to your own place, especially when there are separate islands.
I'm reluctant to explore because I'm not sure if I'll be able to get back. So what's the point of exploring? It would be awesome if there was some sort of checkpoint or minimap system to link two places you've built bases on.
I guess compass solves this issue, but I am in huge favor of some sort of map... or rally point system so you can mark a spot and be able to find it on a minimap or something later.
So that could work in tangent with the bed system... your compass can be configurable to point to the different beds instead of just your main bed (or your spawn point, if there is no main bed)
While I'm not so sure about the mini-map as an in-game feature*, I found the last part to be almost exactly what I was thinking.
What if, when you crafted the bed, if you used all the same colour wool, you craft a bed with that colour blanket. When you place the bed, your compass will show a needle of that colour that points to that bed. Right clicking the compass would cycle through the available colours. The game would check when you craft a bed of a given colour to see if there is an existing bed with that colour and... what? Give an override and destroy the old one if accepted? Just deny the crafting? What do you think?
I don't know much about programming, but from how i've heard the item id system works, accomplishing this might take some kind of arcane programming wizardry or something, but this would be a good system for nav points.
*I think you should have to craft a map by using paper, ink and feathers. More on this here. <---this will be a link when I have something to like to :tongue.gif:
Beds will eventually be able to be set as spawn points. Done.
You, sir, get one for stating the obvious.
But what happens with multiple beds? Sure, the most recent one used should be the one to respawn at, but how about going long distance from bed to bed? Knowing how to locate your beds would be handy if you start to build up a few.

There are currently 2 methods for doing this. The first is using the Nether to build gates between multiple distant locations, a problem with this is you generally need a mapping tool to math out the distances between bases and put new Nether Gates to facilitate fast travel. The second is putting a building on top of your original spawn point, getting a compass at your second base, and cutting yourself a path to your spawn point and then running rails between them, this method's problem is that you need a lot of iron, hundreds of bars, if not thousands to run the rails together, not to mention carts, and redstone when things get more complicated.
No I wasn't even talking about fast travel, really. But I was considering the portal idea.
OK, look at it this way: i'm currently exploring the seed -1784338777788894343. I have beds located all over the place, some almost 2 full kilometers from each other, so going from one of those to the other, it's not really a whim to do very often, but more of a desire to abandon one base for a few days, go back to the other and play the other base, and swap it up, and so on and so forth. If you start across that kind of distance and get turned around by some skeletons, it'll be good to know, outside of orienting yourself with celestial objects (a concept I love in the game, btw), how to get yourself back on track and a more advanced compass would help point you in a more accurate direction.
Then you could set your compass to a specific bed, have it lead you right there, and snooze you can, upon the bed of your choice, yes?
But, again, I haven't been able to shake the feeling of the arcane programming wizardry yet.

Imo that's old speculation, I though Notch implementing beds with a certain, non spawn point related purpose would hush that thought.
Also, and I know re-spawning at the same spot each time isn't exactly logical, but how is respawning in your bed more so?
Nobody mentioned logic.
