Actually... I have to disagree with you on this. From personal experience, Shields will break pretty quickly if you're facing multiple enemies. I actually avoid crafting a shield because I usually want to keep torches or other items in my left hand.
I feel like shields last forever now ever since they dramatically increased the durability. They're cheap anyway.

Shields tank up way too much damage, they used to break at a reasonable rate however if I remember correctly they changed the durability in 1.10 of the shield from 181 to 337.
I find it a bit op since you can easily craft so many of them with such basic resources, 1 iron and few wooden planks.
Either make it somehow harder to obtain or nerf it back.
You can't craft a shield while blocking, though. And you won't be able to switch without putting another shield in your hotbar...

Honestly, I hate when people make these threads, but don't them out. It is becuase of threads like these that people don't want the old PVP back. You can't just bash on the new one, you have to give upsides of the old one. You have to find a middleground, balance weapons out. You can't just half ass this and expect people to agree with you. Trust me, I would give anything for the old system, but it just doesn't work like this.

Has anyone mentioned people who use auto-click? That was like an automatic win tool minus the hacking. I'm glad that 1.9+ got rid of those cheaters for good. Plus, hoes can now be used as weapons now that they swing faster than fists thanks to 1.9.

I'll be the first to admit the new system isn't perfect, it's far from it, like several other features in the game. But the way to 'fix' that isn't by removing everything that was added, but to look at what was added, and see what could be made better.
A thread like this isn't a solution to a problem, as it would only make things worse, since you would remove any chance of improving that Minecraft has by removing features that can or do work well.
Thank you. Take it from a person who loved the old PVP, and quit because it is gone, this is the best thing to do. This new system needs to be revamped a little as well. MC doesn't work if you remove every new update that a minority doesn't agree with.

They still need to tweak armor values, but other than that, the new system is better. Takes a bit of actual skill to win.
What I mean by armor values is that fire and potions, tipped arrows are highly ineffective due to armor absorbing all of it. Poison shouldn't be absorbed by armor in my opinion. Safe with fire, unless you have fire prot. Which is currently the most useless enchant because basic prot protects you from all sources of damage equally. There's literally no need for fire prot.

Except least cooldown matters little when every entity you attack is invincible for .5 seconds after you attack them, meaning that all those extra hits you get in don't actually connect and deal damage. Just like how diamond axes deal a ridiculous amount of damage, but have a very high cooldown as a result.[/b]
