You know what would be awesome? Coal tools that you can light on fire!
First, coal tools have the durability of gold and the mining speed of wood. However, if right-clicked with a flint and steel in your inventory, coal tools can be lit on fire (this takes a use away from the flint and steel). A second right click will put the tool out.
While burning, coal tools take constant durability damage in addition to any durability used up via mining.
Sword: Pretty obvious what a flaming sword does: Sets things on fire.
Pickaxe: Smelts and rock-based object it mines while on fire. Mine a cobble, get a smoothstone. Mine some iron ore, get back some iron ingots.
Axe: While on fire, converts logs into charcoal and ignites leaf blocks
Hoe: I haven't got a clue. A flaming, black, scythe-looking thing is pretty cool though.
Shovel: While on fire, any sand mined is turned into glass. Yeah, there isn't that much for a shovel lit on fire to do.
Personally, I think coal tools should not be craftable with charcoal. Just a personal opinion.
So, what do you think? Post it on GetSatisfaction? Make it into a mod request? Let it die an an extremely ironic metaphorical fire? Feedback is good! As are uses for the hoe! Seriously, what do you do with a burning hoe?
TL;DR
Weak coal tools that can be set on fire with a F&S to achieve various favorable effects, but will also take durablilty damage over time.
Circular logic aside, what don't you like about the suggestion? Are there some specific parts you don't like, or do you just disapprove of the idea in general?

No it doesn't. And there's no circular logic here. Flaming weapons is just a bad idea in general.

How does it not? It's awesome! Don't you want an awesome game!?
How are flaming tools a bad idea? It's no worse an idea than punching a meter-thick tree trunk or going for a swim in icy waters without protective clothing, that's for sure.

"HERPADERP, AWESOME MEANS GOOD, LOLZ!" Nub.
Cthulhu is awesome. Flamethrowers are awesome. Atomic bombs are awesome. They're also all terrible ideas for this game.
awesome is... as you have probably guessed... a highly subjective term. I personally do not like coal as a tool as it is already used in so much of Minecraft.
Torches, multiple uses in a furnace, powering minecarts, etc. I do not agree with this idea due to the already overwhelming uses.
Sounds a bit overpowered, coal is too easy to find.
Coal is easy to find, but consider: It has the durability of a gold tool. That's half of the durability of a wood tool. It has the mining speed of a wood tool. Rather slow. To use it's special ability, you have to have one iron and one flint to make a flint and steel. Plus, while it's burning, it takes additional durability damage over time, which, when you're breaking things with the speed of wood, is even more of a crimper. It seems pretty balanced to me.
Coal doesn't work that way, but I won't use that argument here.
In general, Coal should be devoted to other uses beyond "HAHA FLAMING PICKAXE AND SWORD" because Flint and Steel is the "go to tool" for starting fires. If we had other things that could start fires, it would make it all-the-more harder to manage fires made by griefers, and make Flint and Steel obsolete, since coal comes in heavier than iron does.
That would mean Notch would be making his own tool obsolete for no reason other than making tools that Diamond outclasses in terms of durability and damage to begin with. Other than making things catch on fire and not being stronger than Diamond, they sound pretty useless. What we have is fine, we need more things than tools.
How does it not? It's awesome! Don't you want an awesome game!?

Coal is too common anyway.
Yeah, most of what you've named as awesome are rather good ideas for the game. Flamethrower? Yes. Atomic bomb? Yes.
As for the abundance of coal, I've addressed that in my post above.

How about coal armor, you ignite it and it damages you wouldn't that be[size=xx-large] awesome[size] =P [sarcasm]

Actually, that would suck. There is nothing awesome about that. And I've already addressed the overpowered argument.
Yes. you see a mob. set it on fire with a coal sword. It is even pretty much a self replenishing tool, you make a coal axe and cut down a lot of trees.
