Greetings,
I have been playing Minecraft for some time now I have noticed many issues with “advancement” (for lack of a better term) of Survival mode.
Currently, it is something like this:
1. Punch large trees with hands to obtain blocks of wood.
2. Using mystical powers and/or obsidian fingernails, craft wood into neat blocks of planks.
3. Build a workbench with planks [that appears to have metal tools on it].
4. Build a wooden pickaxe.
5. Mine cobblestone and coal.
6. Create stone tools and torches before nightfall.
And so on…
I believe it should be more like this, requiring necessary changes to be made.
1. Use hands to “gather” (not punch!) twigs from leaf blocks.
2. Prospect dirt with a stick equipped for a chance at obtaining flint.*Prospecting is the same as destroying except that it does not destroy the dirt block and takes about 3 times longer. A graphical change to the dirt signifies that it has been prospected. It will replenish after a day.
+ =
20% of Flint
80% of Nothing
3. Craft the following recipe:
Stone Hatchet - Weak tool for obtaining wood from trees.
[]
4. Whack trees with Stone Hatchet to obtain wood. Workbench recipe would be changed so that it requires at least 1 iron ingot.
5. Craft the following recipe (this can be done at the same time as 3.)
Stone Pick - Weak tool for destroying harder blocks.
6. Destroy Stone Blocks with Pick. Harvested Cobblestone can be used as a substitute for Flint in Stone tool recipes.
7. Mine Coal and craft torches to survive the night. Ideally there would be a more "realistic" way of obtaining light, preferably with the use of flint. One idea I have would be to place an unlit torch and then light it with a flint mechanism (not exactly , something easier to craft). Once this has been done once, the player will automatically light torches as they are placed as long as there is a lighting mechanism in the inventory.
8. Survival through the first several nights would depend on creativity and use of the extended 2x2 crafting table (credit to GreyAcumen; see his thread). The Workbench could not be crafted until Iron ore is obtained and smelted with a Mini-Furnace:
The Mini-Furnace can only smelt one thing at a time regardless of it can be stacked or not. It smelts slower but uses fuel slightly more efficiently than a real furnace.
9. Finally a Workbench could be crafted somewhat like this:
The Stone Pick would mine stone about one fourth as fast as the Stone Pickaxe does now. Iron Picks cannot be crafted, but Iron Pickaxes can be crafted using the current pattern. Stone and Wood Pickaxes can no longer be crafted, as Stone Picks replace them. This will make natural caves more valuable and cave-spelunking more common, while reducing the prevalence of 1x2 horizontal shafts and other such things. Iron (and possibly diamond, although I think not) equipment can be repaired at the new-and-improved Workbench with a number (1-3) or Iron Ingots. Cobblestone farming and clearing out large chambers will still be a possibly in this way.
Still under construction, but you may post. I am looking for better methods for the following:
Obtaining Flint
Lighting Torches
Smelting Items without a Workbench
I agree that the way progression works is a little weird, but punching trees and mysteriously crafting wooden planks has become a hallmark of the game. It would make me somewhat sad to see it go.
I'd have to play it and see what I thought. Interesting idea though.
I've restarted on many worlds where I am left scrambling (already) for the materials I need before night comes out (surface coal). While I like the idea you're getting at, it seems a bit brutal and time constraints turn this a bit more from survival to suicide.
I am personally mixed on this. Part of me says yes as it forces the player to better spend his in-game time, the other part worries about the balance mechanics and if such additions are more good than harm. This game, as you already know, is only in beta. There are also thousands of players being drawn in without a friggin clue what to do. OK, I knew to punch trees, but. OMG, it's dark! Is there a way to create light? Obviously, the answer is to mine coal and make torches. Since then, the availability of torches has expanded with the addition of charcoal. Players, I believe, who are completely inexperienced, would be put off rather than entranced by the game and wonder why they purchased in the first place.
