I was thinking earlier about a way to "spiffy up" the armor in MC. I had a simple idea to use some underused materials to make the armor perform a special function. (not terribly original, but meh)
The primary example, and the one I would most like to see implemented, is the use of feathers to make a "wing" in the 3x3 crafting grid, then taking a piece of armor into the grid by itself, and setting the wing next to it.
The primary result would be lets say "winged boots" and they could double your jumping height to 2 blocks.
To take this further, if it were diamond boots in the recipe it could increase your jumping height, if the shoes were iron it could prevent fall damage, if leather they could increase base movespeed by a certain amount. (30%?)

[] [] [] Feathers would be wings mentioned above.
Each piece of armor would have durability as normal of course, with perhaps reduced durability for the effects.
To prevent having all these bonuses at once, the only thing (at first perhaps?) to hold a wing "enchant" would be shoes, ergo only one bonus at a time.
Keep in mind, that none of these bonuses are particularly extravagant, save for no fall damage, and even that should be used cautiously as it could be a pain getting back up wherever you have fallen from. I'd like to think a lot of builders would like increased movespeed. >_>
As a side note, other possible materials (for other armor pieces perhaps) could be things like flint, or coal, though to what end I see not. (bucket of water enchant, losing the bucket, and armor becomes a scuba suit >_>)

As with any idea, I enjoy discussing the possibilities more than the chance of it being put in, (as most suggestions on most forums never again see the light of day lol) so please constructive criticisms and creative discussion only.
I rather like it. Notch has said he wants to stay away from magic, so I'm not sure how well winged boots would go over with him, but I like the idea. My only worry is that players would suddenly feel the need to carry around multiple sets of armor, and the decreased inventory space could become really frustrating.
Yeah I'd rather it not be magic either, I really prefer the simplicity. Let's chalk up the effect to "ludicrous logic", rather than "Magic".
As to the inventory space, it really is no different than any other piece of equipment. As is most games, and in reality, you have to manage your space, what you take with you, and how much space you leave yourself for loot.
It would still act like normal armor, so it would be worn and not take up space, apart from if you want to have multiple effects available to you at any time, and the price you pay for that availability would be your inventory space. (Sort of like inherent balancing. lol)
(Ludicrous logic being like teaching a 1 ft. long pokemon bird the ability to fly you and all your gear, friends, family, and whatever else anywhere you want to go.) http://www.halolz.com/2010/05/25/scythe ... learn-fly/
The idea is rather interesting. I could see it working, it would be decently balanced to to it being on your armor, so if people want more effects, they can take the extra stuff with them, but use up the inventory space, and the time it takes to put on. Again, magic is not a good idea for the explanations, mechanics also are not a good idea, since this world isn't really very far in technology. Durability would have to be preferably low, and it can give more options to the items that don't currently have much use, so you could have a bubble of slime on your head for water breathing! I can't think of a way they would work at the moment, but I'd like to see this implemented.
lol yes i changed the title from "Tailor your armor for ye?" or something similar....realized how stupid it looked, as well as not giving near any information to the subject..... >________>
As to Saraniri, thanks for the response.
Yeah, seeing how magic and mechanics would be out of place in this simplistic world, I am leaning more towards it would work like making a working clock out of gold and some powder. I dub this "Ludicrous Logic" or "Video game logic". It works if you dont think about it too much. lol
I mean, it makes "perfect sense" to put feathers together into a wing, and to put the wing on something to make it fly. Though players being heavy and all it wouldn't do much more than boost your jump height. <.<

Very Curious.
