Hello
And Welcome to a more realistic update to Diamond, Obsidian and Gold (Apparently)
First of all let me give you some quotes from Wikipedia about
- Obisidian
Quote from Wikipedia »
Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock.
Quote from Wikipedia »
Obsidian is mineral-like, but not a true mineral because as a glass it is not crystalline; in addition, its composition is too complex to comprise a single mineral.
Quote from Wikipedia »
Obsidian was valued in Stone Age cultures because, like flint, it could be fractured to produce sharp blades or arrowheads. Like all glass and some other types of naturally occurring rocks, obsidian breaks with a characteristic conchoidal fracture. It was also polished to create early mirrors.
Quote from Wikipedia »
Obsidian has been used for blades in surgery, as well-crafted obsidian blades have a cutting edge many times sharper than high-quality steel surgical scalpels, the cutting edge of the blade being only about 3 nanometers thick.[13] Even the sharpest metal knife has a jagged, irregular blade when viewed under a strong enough microscope; when examined even under an electron microscope an obsidian blade is still smooth and even.
- Gold
Quote from Wikipedia »
Gold metal is dense, soft, shiny and the most malleable and ductile pure metal known.
- Diamond
Quote from Wikipedia »
Diamond is renowned as a material with superlative physical qualities, most of which originate from the strong covalent bonding between its atoms. In particular, diamond has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any bulk material. Those properties determine the major industrial application of diamond in cutting and polishing tools.
Update to Diamond :
- Is now, and for ever will be, the most durable matirel in the game
- It will not be the fastest tool in the game anymore (I think most of you know where I am going with this)
- Does more "smashing" damage to oponents
- The Diamond storage block, is one of the most durable block in the game (followed closely by Bricks, Iron storage blocks, and Gold Storage Blocks
Update to Obsidian :
- Will now be able to be made into tools
- Is the fastest tool in the game, but has very low duribility (it's glass)
- Does more damage agaisnt leather and - armour wearing people
- Does more "slashing" damage agaisnt oponents
- Has a 5% chance (Can be Tweaked) to break after every duribility used
- Has an Increased chance to break when used again metalic/mineralistic objects (Diamond, Gold and Iron Armour)
- Obsidian, when mined will drop 1-3 obsidian shards, that when formed together (9 in the 3x3 crafting grid) will become an obsidian block
- Obsidian, is now not the most durable block in the game
Update to Gold :
- Will Slow down it's mining speed Better then stone (aparently high said by lawl)
- Will take down it's duribility (if needed)
- Pretty much lower the tier in between Iron and Stone (or could move the "Obsidian" Weapon/Tool Tier up and just nerf the gold tier so it isn't like Gold)
I know the cons to this are that obsidian bases are now, not creeper proof and that you need more diamonds and stuff to make your base creeper proof, I know the cons of something like this implemented, I also know the benefits
P.S. I'll look into other minerals in wikipedia, if wanted, and see what I can come up for a realistic version in Minecraft
Anyways, Hope you like my little twist to the Update for these 3 Materials in Minecraft
Please tell me If I need to make some changes
Remember One Of These Changes Can Not Live Withouth The Other
Will Change Gold, if someone confirms it not to be like what lawl says

Adding realism into Minecraft is one Idea I refuse to agree with.
Minecraft Obsidian is Obsidian in name only, not the actual IRL ore. Minecraft Diamond is Diamond in name only as well, and only serves to be the rarest and strongest ore in Minecraft.
What I get from it is that since it's durability is very low, it's somewhat like gold. Since it's VERY fast, it's ALSO like gold, since gold mines faster than diamond. BUT WAIT, gold doesn't have a 5% chance to break, and it CAN break metallic minerals without a hassle. The only reason might be that Obsidian is easier to gather, but it's not worth the trouble. I like my awesome diamon tool, thank you very much.

with a right-click to repair mod in SMP, Gold Tools are the best tools to use to clear away Coal and Stone blocks (0.49 seconds to break a stone block), while Diamond covers being able to collect every other stone resource in the game, and lasting the longest. Obsidian Tools should add something new to the table. Since Obsidian is more common than Iron (since it appears in lava pools made of 9+ blocks), it should add something new. Rather than be a tier of tool, it should have a different property.
good job you can read wikipedia and know how to quote. So what? This is far from a revolutionary and helpful idea. What makes minecraft great is not its realism, but in its presentation. Your suggestion would overly complicate the simplicity and ease of the aspects of the game you are suggesting upon. This is not real life and you're suggesting realism be injected into a cuboidal world...If you want realism, go work in a coal mine. See how fun realistic lung cancer is.

So you say 1.4 is fail because you don't know how to update your server? WTF
Thats like saying all cars fail because you don't know how to put gas in them.

Remember the floating dirt rule.
I prefer the way it is now.
Ok Floating Islands Stay, thats a No Brainer
I'm just going with more of an atomic look at the minerals and what ever glass is classified in

NO
Read the rest of the thread, It's perfectly balanced (ok well a little underpowered)

So fast, that it's almost comparable to the speed of breaking blocks in Classic.
@Kira :
That'll be fun won't it? lol I'll see what I can think up, so far I have really sharp
I'll change the OP when I find something new to add to the table,
