1.Too overpowered.
2.Above.
3.Again, above.
4.Last freaking time, above.
And, for a fact, your stranded. By yourself. No doggies, kitties, bunnies, anything here to help you. In fact, the closest thing to any pet should be the sheep, chicken, cow, or PIIIIG. Trap them in fences. Dont go more than 100 blocks away, problem solved.
So have it be really hard to get a dog.. That or if you want the game hard, Don't get a dog?
1. Instead of bringing one back every time.. How about it just has a small inventory and brings its loot to you.
2. Should not sniff out Diamond, Iron, or Gold. I think that it sniffing anything else is fine.
3. Sure why not. As long as he doesn't give away where the creeper is. Creepers are the most deadly mob and you really don't have any way to know they are there short of seeing them, and all other mobs make sounds.. So this sounds good to me.
4. If this is not true, I will be upset. Dogs should NEVER despawn. Infact, I should be able to name him. :biggrin.gif:
5. My own thoughts.... He should play fetch! If you throw a stick, he should run after it and bring it back!

Tears aren't the end of your sins... You have to bear them painfully, Forever.
I think that's a bit too much. Monsters aren't terribly difficult to kill as it is, there isn't much need to make it easier. However, we know dogs are pretty much a done deal at this point, so it's fair to consider what we want them to do.
Barking at nearby mobs is reasonable and realistic. While it might seem to nerf creepers, the dog isn't equipped to fight hostile mobs and so it's not going to take out the creeper for you. And even if the dog barks, it will probably often not be obvious where the creeper is coming from.
Dogs could hunt chickens. That's not really that big a deal, but it does help out a little bit.
Some of the proposed overpowered suggestions could be balanced by penalties, like having dogs bury items. The dog would pick up an item lying on the ground, run around carrying it for a while, and if you don't get it back, the dog would look for a patch of dirt to bury it under. It would require a depth of two blocks of dirt, replacing the lower block with empty space. The item would essentially be teleported into that empty space.
The dog should be considered a target by hostile mobs. The response of the would probably be to flee instead of fight.
If there are multiple types of dogs, then there's room for more variety. Maybe only certain dogs bark at nearby mobs. Maybe some dogs are able to defend themselves (and/or the player), although it definitely shouldn't be anymore than the equivalent of iron sword/iron armor. Maybe some will retrieve items for the player a certain percent of the time instead of burying them.

-Dogs, when killing a skeleton, will ALWAYS bring back a bone. Same with zombies. Bones shouldn't drop normally from skeletons.
-Dogs will sniff out ores when in a cave.
-Dogs will bark at sight of creepers.'
-And, dogs will not be able to despawn.
Ideas? Good? No? Muncher?
