I usually die in the stupidest ways, whether it's a mad dash at night to get some materials before getting mobbed by multiple creatures of the night, or I dropped from high mountaintops to find the ground saying "hello" and "goodbye" to my face all at once. So I thought, since when I respawn I'm already going to go retrace my steps to get all my items back, if the death system could work similarly to the World of Warcraft deaths work?
For regular deaths in which you are not engulfed in lava, you can run back to your body from the spawnpoint and restart where you died. The difference is that you're a ghost, who cannot interact with the world's mobs or environment and can't take damage from the world's mobs or environments either. When you die, you have a compass that instead of pointing to the spawnpoint, it points to your body, and you can recover your body and be impervious to damage for a few moments so you can reorientate yourself. Your ghost also moves faster than normal so you can find your body faster.
If you do get engulfed by lava, well, you can't retrieve your body in that sort of situation, so I guess regular respawning like players do now would work.
