Notch himself said that he wanted to implement more magical features into the game, and he said he was pretty content with redstone. With the addition of Lapis Luzuli, I find myself really hoping that he adds some crafty stuff you can do with the two. Off the top of my head, I think a block that would act as a water spring when hit with a charge, but would dry up when the charge was broke would be nice. Lava could be doable too. Maybe something out of lapis that can freeze water? Or a tool that just creates ice? I guess if lapis showed up more by water in caves, it would make more sense.
I also thought a third kind of stone, something GREEN and LUMINESCENT (not just when touched like redstone ore, constantly) would be awesome, if only because I want to be exploring caves and find Plutonium . The only use I can think of for it would be to grow grass on any dirt (useful for building floating islands or contained ecosystems) or instantly grow trees or add foliage. But I feel like combining more stone types (possibly even glowstone dust...) should let you make interesting devices, or even blocks that responded to physics differently. some ideas for those could be anything from a ball that moves when pushed or a cushion that both prevents fall damage and lets you jump higher, to teleporters, lasers, elevators, and more technical mechanisms.
Regardless, I hope they do SOMETHING with lapis. I don't want a rock that's just a dye. that doesn't even make sense
there are probably mods that let you do something like this, but after all my mods got deleted with the update I decided I would just go with the default settings, at least until the full release (tired up updating mods every time minecraft updates). wands and staffs are a good idea though, giving them limited uses would be perfect.
Flint could be used as well, given that it is now more common. a wand that lights enemies on fire from a distance could be invaluable
other potential uses for wands or staffs could be remote activation of devices, growing seeds to wheat instantly, temporary block placement (blocks disappear after a few seconds), perhaps you could enchant fire so that it would not damage you, but still damage mobs?
the greenstone I mentioned would be fun for fiddling with mobs, such as growing or shrinking them. idk not too practical, but still fun. what if it kept one or two mobs from despawning, so you could have a tower with spiders on top, or a creeper in a cage? hmmm.I'm just pitching ideas, it would be really cool if notch did something like this though

And how would it work with existing game mechanics?
Are there mods already demonstrating this can be done?
This is relevant to my interests please go on
Perhaps something like this
Staff or wand head piece
[Lapis]
Stock
combine head and stock to get a full staff (or wand)
Then maybe a specialized forge? to combine the staff with a snowball or lava bucket to get a fire or ice based item
