Well, the suggestion itself is pretty simple. You can ride Polar Bears with a saddle and give them a Bear Armor similar to the Horse Armor we already have. Bear Armors exist in three varieties: Iron, Diamond, and Gold, just like Horse Armors. But here comes the interesting part: You find the Bear Armor in an Igloo Chest. This means you will have a nice motivation to explore icy plains.
Imagine riding a polar bear into battle, wouldn't that be just awesome? You would look like a Warg-riding Orc from World of Warcraft. I think this would make polar bears a more interesting mob, and icy lands a great place to explore. If nothing else, they will look cooler. ❄
Additional idea by Shaddura (thank you!):
I think you should have to tame a lone polar bear, whether it be a bear cub or an adult bear- if they're aggravated however they can't be tamed. They could function as both land and aquatic mounts, not as fast as horses, and only one seat rather than the two that boats have. This would fit with polar bears IRL, which as result of their thick fur overheat easily, so they're not good at moving quickly for longer periods of time.
Maybe to replace a horse's ability to jump, you could give it a leap ability. Leaping lets it jump over objects, but it also propels the burr forwards quickly, letting you cross large gaps- at the cost of lower jump height. After leaping, the burr can continue to move, slowing down to regular movement speed. You can only leap while standing still, so it's mostly for crossing gaps and getting your burr mount moving.
I really love Shaddura's ideas. I wanted to add the swimming feature but I thought it was too much "op", and he balanced the things.

Sorry for the long post, these are just my suggestions as a bear enthusiast.
This almost has me sold but it's not quite there yet, what makes this appealingly unique from a horse? Sure, it has the leap, but I just see that as a stat-tweaked jump ability.

I love this idea! One question though, how do you tame it? I would think it would be great nteresting if it could only be tamed with salmon. But anyways, it's your idea, and you have a big bucket of SUPPORT!
It would be awesome if they would attack enemies as well...I mean , you would charge it into an enemy while riding it and the polar bear would bite them.

Horses are fast on land and are great for high jumps. Bears are faster in water and great for long jumps. Bears are more rare and more cool. Horses are still cool, but for different things. I'm glad you kinda like the suggestion X)

I always tought they should be tamed with fish, but this doesn't really matter for this suggestion, so maybe make your own suggestion in "Small Suggestions" Thread and say bears should follow you when you have fish in your hand

Mh, not sure this sounds right... sounds cool, but not right many would say this would be overpowered or something, they are always annoyed when something touches the combat thing

I think that taming should be part of the suggestion. Using salmon sounds like a good idea to me.

I was thinking something like that as well. Although if it was up to me, it should be while leaping- you can only leap while standing still, so it'd be a viable offensive option that isn't too polarizing to grounded players.

Sorry but this doesn't sell me. Right now I'm seeing two mobs with the same purpose but with slight speed tweaks. "Bears are more rare and more cool" doesn't explain anything at all.

I personally think this does matter for this suggestion, you're talking about riding bears, which involves taming them.
Yelling out a NO SUPPORT without a reason as to why "you don't see this working" doesn't exactly help this suggestion or Virdex, who is someone willing to take other views into account to better their suggestion. So please, what are your thoughts on how it wouldn't work? I'd actually like to know as well.
Personally, I like this idea. and to emphasize on some points a few people have mentioned already: 1. Polar bears should probably be tamable with Salmon, not just any fish, using any fish would make it too easy imo. 2. Yes, they should move a little slower than horses. 3. I like Shaddura's idea of leaping only while standing still, though never reaching the height of a horses jump. And also a bear can only be tames while not aggravated. 4. I also agree with BlackAbsence on a few points, but not all of them: Bears could be a little heavier to control than a horse, they don't follow players around like a dog, and they attack what the player attacks. I don' t however agree with being untamed when struck by the player or forgetting about you after ten minutes.
In addition to these things, I think it's important that the Bear doesn't follow you or TP to your location. I think that if you lose a bear, you lose it. In other words, if you leave the bear behind somewhere and forget where that place was, it will remain at that place until you find it again.
This is a subjective, goofy and just a pinch of a not-so-mature statement. I don't think the "coolness" of bears has any weight on the quality of the suggestion.

Good, good, I was just thinking that myself but that might just become a bit to op over time. Maybe make it like if you get hurt from, say, a skeleton, the polar bear would immediately chase after it till it "bites" it once then leaves the rest to you. While the bear is chasing the mob you have no control over it unless you dismount.
That's just what I was thinking, It might work, might now. We'll see

I refrained from answering earlier since I'm not the OP.
But my image of a bear mount would be the following:
•They move at the same speed as a boat and don't slide or slow down while walking on ice. This makes sense, as polar bears overheat easily, thus they cannot move as fast as other animals for long periods of time. Gameplay-wise, it means they don't replace horses- as even the slowest breed of horse is faster, and the fastest breed is close to being twice as fast.
•They can swim while carrying you. Sows usually carry their cubs on their back while swimming, since the cubs are too thin to swim in cold water- I thought that the same would apply to a bear carrying their human buddy. Boats support multiple passengers and are far more disposable, so I don't think they'd be made redundant by this.
•They cannot jump, only leap. To leap, you stand still and charge a jump like on a regular horse, and upon proper input, your bear will leap forward a fair distance, crossing gaps easily. During the leap, the first enemy you run into will get hit for 3 hearts of damage. This is completely made up- bears are not known for leaping, but they definitely don't jump much either. I just thought it'd be a neat feature to give them to help differentiate them a bit, as well as give them something unique.
This would make them a practical mount for traversing a variety of areas, particularly those with lots of ice, lakes, and possibly ravines. The attack on the leap is just an added bonus since you can't leap while moving anyways. They're also really fricking cute and fluffy.

Actually, Polar bears do wait still, sometimes for hours, to pounce at prey that emerge from ice. It's not a big pounce, but making that ingame pounce a bit bigger like a leap seems to make sense to me. yes.

My opinion:
You can tame a Bear with Fish, only when it's not in an aggressive state.
Bears are stronger than Horses, can swim, and attack, but are slower / jump shorter / harder to control than Horses.
Bears would attack anything you're attacking when tamed.
Bears do not follow the player around when tamed like Dogs.
You would lose control over the Bear when the Bear is struck because the Bear attacks anything that attacks it.
Hitting a tamed Bear will un-tame it.
A bear may forget about you in 10 minutes, if you are not riding it, meaning you'll have to re-tame it.
And that's how I think this powerhouse of a unit can be balanced in-game.
