As the title says , add the hammer
Just think about it ! many constructions cannot be done without a hammer , you need the hammer to craft items , to build , even the task of taking down a big wall or something like that in real life takes a big hammer manualy that is
So i suggest to add a hammer as a working/building/crafting tool in minecraft
The hammer could simply be an AOE (3x3) upgrade to the pick, but that's fairly unoriginal and fairly limited. Maybe it just destroys blocks and works on anything, allowing us to dig out tunnels or clear areas without flooding inventory with trash. Another possibility is that the hammer lets us crush one material down to its component parts, similar to the modded concept of turning cobble to gravel to sand. This could be done by changing the block drop, or it could be something that happens "in place", making the hammer a tool that changes the look of the world but doesn't allow you to remove it (hammering a block of sand might turn it to sandstone instead of dropping a block or dropping nothing at all.)
Perhaps the coolest idea I've heard is that the hammer is a way-of-life upgrade for the crafting table/player crafting grid that allows you to select recipes based on what the the amount of material can be used for. For example, with the hammer in its crafting table slot/held in the main hand when you put 2 log blocks in the the crafting grid you might get a dropdown selector for 8 planks, 16 sticks, 12 slabs, 4 wooden pressure plates, 8 wooden buttons, 3 doors, 4 stairs, and 1 chest. This could perhaps be expanded to work with everything you have on-hand in the player inventory so you only needed to have the items in inventory to make what you want instead of having to manually place them in the grid.
Why should this be in the game? What is fun about using it? Why would players want to use it?
I know mincraft is a game and should stay that way , furthermore the simplisity of the game is what attacted me in the first place.
But as we all know that to craft a sword you need to hammer some iron to take shape of a sword , to build a house you need to use a hammer to nail planks and many other stuff that its needed to use a hammer for.
I am just saying that a hammer would bring a little more reality to the game and also keeping it simple

Adding realism doesn't really... "add" anything. It's not exactly fun or increasing any sort of gameplay value. Right now, this hammer is just... there. Realism is a neutral (or sometimes negative if it adds senseless difficulty) attribute. Not a positive one.

Here I actually see this being useful, but even then, a hammer doesn't need to be there for this. Making this a necessary thing for making armor/tools might be a slap in the face for players because something easy now suddenly has a pointless, unavoidable step.

Minecraft isn't realistic. Case in point: floating blocks, beholder fish, dragons, magic...
Realism is completely unimportant. What matters is if it's fun or not.
What's it for? Making stuff? Don't we already have crafting table and what and how would it "make" stuff anyway. You haven't put much into this suggestion, just saying "oh look, we need a hammer" won't cut it. You gave us what you need to craft it with but not how, what;s the layout of these ingredients, and your saying it does nothing, everything would work exactly the same just it would be visible.
Oh, and what reality, Minecraft is realistic, there's magic, monsters, giant insects and hidden temples no one's ever discovered before (and the fact that you can break stuff by slapping it repeatedly)
(and that's why I don't make suggestions cuz I really suck at it)

I can't really see any purpose as to why a hammer should be added, aside from altering a blocks form when struck by a hammer. They have that use for hammers in other games like Terraria, but it wouldn't work in Minecraft seeing that each block has a different crafting cost. The only other thing a hammer could be used for is changing a blocks positions, as stated by EndyEnderman, it could be used to rotate or shift blocks like stairs. but then... I don't see why it would be necessary, because it doesn't take long just to break a block and re-place it.
Hmm... I guess, when I think about it, the hammer could be a another portable crafting tool which needs to be held to serve its function. For example, right clicking your hammer on a block will bring up a small and very limited crafting grid. Now, I haven' t given this function enough thought to know exactly what sort of items this limited crafting grid could offer a player.... I'll leave that part up to the OP, if they decide they would like to implement this function in their suggestion.
Ok... And if to use an anvil was necessary to right click with the hammer or if you could not? I do not think you can fix an armor with your hands...
That's not really what I was saying, no. I was thinking more about the possibility of right clicking a hammer on a block, say, like stairs, which would bring up a small crafting grid. Maybe allowing you to change the color of the stairs by adding a dye to the stairs. of course, the dye would have to be in your inventory and all that. And I don't know if dying an item is the best example here. I was just spit balling the possibility of doing small alterations to blocks such as planks and stairs and other craftable blocks.

Crafting recipe?
the hammer will be used as crafting tool for armor/tools
crafting recipe 1 stick and 3 iron ingots
i think hammer is used on an anvil but is invizible so it could be nice to be visible no ?

basically, you can craft only basic things without a hammer, is this what you're trying to say?

IDK, but maybe the hammer can rotate stairs... ever annoyed of misplaced stairs??? [can we has sideways stairs and slabs too plz???]
Using a hammer to rotate stuff? Why?
