It's actually rather simple: one block of most things should equal two half blocks and vice versa. Sure, we may not see wool half-blocks and the like for quit some time, but the blocks we already do have half-blocks for should implement this recipe. This would eliminate the fail of pressure pad recipes having a one block width difference from half-blocks.
I actually like the utility blocks (such as chests) being reduced to themselves instead of materials. They become very useful for long mining trips. Instead of having blocks all over, you can simply take one box with you. They're also great for renovating a building, moving chests from temporary rooms to new food pantries and mineral storage shacks, etc.
However, other blocks, such as glowstone and boats, are kinda' annoying. For those, I would want boats to revert to boats and glowstones to revert to glowstones (seriously, 9 for one stone >.>).
That reminds me, glowstone's dust should never make the stone itself; instead, you should need to craft one stone into 1-8 dust (depending on the recipes they'll be using in the future). I know that technically they break like glass, but....It's really disgusting how many you need to make a single block of the stuff.

Couldn't agree more. Also, I think it would be a benefit if when you have a chest in your inventory and your inventory is full, all other items that are picked up would go in that chest. Although, you would have to place the chest down to retrieve the items.

i.e.: Boats, doors, sticks (4), crafting tables and wood stairs should give back your planks
