The Ocean Update
(Heavily Work In Progress - Everything is subject to change)
The Ocean Update will include tons of new changes to improve the overall quality and exploration of oceans, as well as adding tons of various content to improve the game.
Features will include (I'll try and break them down later):
Different ocean biomes
Coral Reef Biome
Randomly spawning underwater caves to explore
Randomly spawning islands that have a chance to spawn rare treasure chests
Sunken pirate ships that will be similar to dungeons. Will go into detail later
Ghost ships
Brand new mobs to go along with all the places
Ghost pirates
Electric eels
Sharks
Fish that actually swim in the water
Possibly a new boss called the Kraken that would spawn in deep ocean biomes
I do plan on thinking of new biomes, but one that I will go into detail with is the coral reef biome. The biome will be teeming with life of all sorts. Players would be able to find all sorts of various loot at the bottom, perhaps pearls or gems that they could trade with villagers (still thinking of more uses). Coral Reefs would include a large network of coral and other aquatic plants to make it feel alive and packed with new things to explore. Fish such as clownfish or other exotic fish would swim around the coral reef and players would be able to kill them and harvest them as an item. Fish would be able to be cooked and used as a source of food.
As well as having a tropical theme with the islands, palm trees, etc. there could also be an Arctic Ocean Biome. It would feature different areas covered with ice and snow. Seals would be added to give it a more of an arctic theme, also possibly penguins and the already existing polar bears. (Credit to Sadly_Not for the arctic idea)
Randomly Spawning Places/Structures
Sunken pirate ships would rarely spawn at the bottom of your average ocean biome. Players would swim down to them and be able to explore around. One of the rooms would include a trap door that leads down to the actual inside of the ship itself. The ship overall would be very large and would include ghost pirates as a mob (will talk about them later.) At the deepest part of the ship, there would be a room called the treasure room guarded by the ghost pirate captain (will also go into detail later.) The ship would also include various other rooms such a bunk room, a kitchen, and other rooms you would expect to find in a pirates ship.
Another place I would like to discuss are randomly spawning islands. As you already know, minecraft already does have randomly spawning islands - but there’s really no exploration or anything worth it on them. This suggestion will completely overhaul them. Islands will be much more realistic as far as terrain goes. Perhaps something like this http://imgur.com/a/2nkPs
Basically just like high cliffs. Islands will include a cave network with tons of ores to mine and mobs to kill. Rarely, islands will also include treasure chests jam packed with loot - but they won’t be easy to find!
Bosses
I was thinking of Kraken (http://imgur.com/a/34knH) boss that would spawn in deep ocean biomes and attack the player if they get too close. They would a ton of tentacles that would swing at the player, either grabbing them and squeezing the player dealing a ton of damage. The player would have to hit the tentacles and cut them off to free from it’s grip. Another attack would feature a knockback attack that would fling the player perhaps 10 blocks away, dealing a fair bit of damage. This idea needs some serious balancing so help would be greatly appreciated.
Mobs
This also needs some serious balancing (I’m not good with statistics and all that) so help is also appreciated for this. Ghost pirates would spawn in sunken ships and would wield a pirate sword, or something that looks similar to a scimitar. That would behave similar to zombies but would deal more damage and have a slightly more health. Fish and electric eels would spawn in coral reefs (I believe I mentioned this before.) Sharks would also spawn around coral reefs and would frequently hunt down other smaller fish. There could also be different variations of sharks such as tiger or hammerhead. Depending on their variation would determine their spawn rate, as well as damage, health and drops. Penguins, seals and polar bears would also spawn in the arctic ocean biome (will elaborate further as I get more ideas.)
Thread will be changed a TON as suggestions and balancing come in. Any ideas you guys have are really helpful as well as any support. If you don't like this suggestion and have ideas to help improve it, please tell me.
I made this thread because I really felt like there was no reason to explore oceans. Yeah ocean monuments are nice and all that, but it just simply isn’t enough. I’m open to all criticism and I appreciate all feedback. I mainly need help with balancing mobs, spawn rates and really anything I could do to improve and balance this update so that players would find it appealing. Thank you for reading my thread.

I'll take anything to make the ocean less boring. Anything. I can't wait to see how this suggestion turns out!
Would the ocean biomes be like separated into hot or cold? Like there's an Arctic Ocean biome that has different mob spawns compared to a Tropical Ocean biome?
how about some swimming gear to help with exploring the coral reefs deep underwater?
some examples can be: snorkels, flippers, oxygen tank, etc.
it would suck if you had to just had to slowly float down int the deep ocean.
It's a good concept, but I don't think snorkels and oxygen tanks really fit in with the whole minecraft theme. Players can just use water breathing potions or depth strider if they need to get around easier.

I was going with more of an overall tropical theme, but that's a good idea to have an Arctic Ocean biome. Perhaps polar bears would spawn as well as seals n' stuff. Great idea, will add later.
I like this idea, oceans are easily the most boring and neglected areas of the game. Increased occurrence of islands in the ocean, with randomly generated structures could be cool. Forest islands in the ocean are also pretty bad. Make islands in the ocean either arctic, with large glaciers and chunks of ice, tropical, with jungles and mountains, or basaltic, with volcanic rock, small amounts of ice and snow, and boreal forests.
I do support ocean variety but in this case I feel that is has too many mobs for one update, not to mention a boss mob as well. If you lowered it down to a few of the best mobs you think people would like, I think that's enough. The pirate ship idea is pretty cool, our ocean floors are just plain fields of sand and dirt.
The update as a whole is meant to completely overhaul the ocean with loads of new content in one massive update, although I do understand what you mean. I will try and revise the thread to remove some of the less important mobs, thanks for replying.

Haven't been able to work on the thread this week, but I will try and add some aesthetics to the thread this upcoming weekend as well as just making everything a lot more neat.

Biomes;
Yes please, I think we do need some more ocean biomes, at least a few more than 'ocean' or 'deep ocean'
Pirate ship;
Unless I'm blind, I didn't see you put anything about what kind of loot we can expect, or the loot from islands for that matter. Just logical things, such as (maybe damaged) swords or a bit of food? Or a new item that might make finding these really worth something a bit larger, making a mini boss fight more rewarding.
Island;
This I see something I could get behind, a tropical paradise with occasional loot? Yes, please. This would be even more wonderful if the islands had their own biome, kinds of trees, maybe unique animals or blocks, etc. Also, what kind of loot can we expect from treasure chests? I'd assume this is more along the lines of gold or higher tier weapons, but doesn't hurt to ask now does it?
Bosses;
The kraken seems a little unnecessary, if we already have all this other stuff, and he doesn't drop anything useful, I understand the idea is good though, but It does need a little balancing.
Mobs;
Not a new suggestion by any means, but I like the '3D fish' idea.
This electric eel, anything special bout this guy? I think he should deal damage if you touch him/are in a range of him, because electric eels can be very dangerous in real life. Also, perhaps they could shock you? Like nothing huge, just if you couldn't move for a second or three after touching one, obviously they probably couldn't be aggressive for this to work without people drowning every time they touched one.
Sharks, again not a new suggestion, but a generally well liked one, all in all. I'm not sure about the whole 'species' of shark thing, because nothing else in MC has its own seperate types in this way. Perhaps one of their drops should be shark fins so we can have shark fin soup
Penguins, really I like penguins and seeing little tuxedo birds wandering around, getting mauled by polar bears most likely, would be amazing.
Seals, alright, these are just kinda 'why not' mobs for me, because if they serve no special purpose, and don't drop anything, then I'd feel bad about clubbing seals because they were in my way.
All around, great suggestion, if anything I would elaborate more on mob drops, attacks, and whatnot, but good suggestion really.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Brewers poem;
Glowstone makes it stronger,
Redstone makes it longer
Yes that poem is very easy to mess up.
Yeah, I support stuff. Although most of this is between 'would enjoy in game' to 'holy jeez meh needyz!'

Yes, I didn't elaborate too much on what kind of loot would be found in pirate ships, although I was thinking of any kind of misc. loot you would find in a dungeon, mine shaft or stronghold. As for islands, the treasure would not be nearly as easy to find, so of course the loot would be much better. I was thinking of anything along the lines of materials such as diamonds, enchanted books, enchanted armor, possibly gold apples - just anything rare.
Kraken needs some serious work and I'm even considering removing it if I can't think of anything that would fit with the whole theme, but yes I agree, it needs balancing.
Electric eels would simply stun the player. The player wouldn't be able to move for a bit and they would take possibly half a heart of damage per second that they're stunned. Still needs balancing.
About the shark fin soup, it's a good idea and I do plan on adding a section to the thread dedicated for all the various items that would be added along with everything also.
Thank you for the feedback. Still need help if anyone is good with balancing mobs and such, so if you're willing to help just shoot me a pm or comment down below.
It's not bad. But I think you want to add too much too quickly. You're talking about possible gems to trade, multiple new biomes, new mobs, etc. While none of those strike me as immediately horrible, I need more detail for all of this before I support any of it. The ideas are nice, but just like any idea, the way they're implemented can make or break them. While you are obviously putting work into this, the suggestion just seems shallow at the moment, having a lot of ideas, but not going deep into why we need all of them, and because of that, it isn't much better than a lot of ocean suggestions, and doesn't give me a good idea of how this is unique in any way.
I like the basic idea, but I think it could be more fleshed out, instead of "here's this generic mob that should be here to make the oceans more exciting". I think you could make the ideas more unique and minecraft feeling than just having a couple animals and structures made out of blocks.

Partial support.
Thank you for the reply
As stated in the top of the thread "(Heavily Work In Progress - Everything is subject to change)", as well as at the bottom of the thread and a few times towards the bottom. The idea is raw and needs to loads of work, I understand that. Everything on the main post is basically guaranteed to be changed, revised or edited in some way.
I'm not really asking for support from people yet (although it is nice if you like it so far) I'm mainly in need of some extra ideas, thoughts or tweaks about the thread, which is what a lot of you have been providing so far, so thank you.

SHould be coupled with Megalodon and shark add-ons.
