I found recently that all my fireplaces now burnt out way too quick for them to be worth anything; however, I have an idea that i think is logical. I think you should be able to craft 9 coal into a coal block.; this block would burn up, but take a while longer to then a wood plank. I would think the time it takes to burn would be the same amount of time a full minecraft night to pass. While writing this I got another idea to add: every so often the fire would get smaller, and smaller and eventually you'd have to replace the block. You could either let it finish burning or right click on the current coal block and "refill" it so it could keep burning.
so this would be the recipe:
Any suggestions welcome, If you don't like it please say why. Thanks.
That wouldnt make much sense, sorry, but even if you clump 9 pieces of coal together - its still just coal and therefor in no way better than 9 single lumps of coal. You do know that you can drop more than one piece of coal at a time into the furnace, yes?
You were talking about using planks as fuel - why would you do that anyways, may I ask, when you know about coal? IF youre using wood for fuel id strongly suggest "smelting" rough trunks in your furnace. One piece of trunk makes one piece of charcoal, which is just the same as normal coal. A piece of coal burns more than five times longer than a plank-block.
I'm not talking about in a furnace but for making a "fireplace"

I dunno, it's far better to just burn netherstone anyway.
I was thinking mostly about multiplayer where you can't get netherstone... good point though.
