First off, searching for 'lanterns' yields lots on jack o lanterns, and a few discussions about them.
this idea is for a light source that follows you as you hold it (using it turns it off/on).
Here's the new crafting feature to allow it.
First create a new item, glass bowl, or glass case, using three glass pieces:
[] [] [] [] = glass bowl
[] []
You then use a glass bowl in conjunction with a redstone torch (concept is to make the lamp 'electric', and not reliant upon a fuel source.
Combine the two (there seems not to be a smiley for 'restone torch'.. but when combining it with this new glass bowl, you then get the "hand lantern".
This sheds light source 20 (I know torches are 14, so this is a bit stronger) around you, but of course doesn't negate the need for fixture lighting, as mobs still spawn in darkness and all this would do is let you nagivate through darkness when you place all your torches.
You also can't place these new lanterns down on the ground, so you can't fix them in places. I'm trying to balance the portable lighting with only making it a portable light source.
addendum:
If you want further balancing, perhaps when lit it has a timer on it, that needs more redstone to 'recharge'. that's not necessary, but if I get a lot of 'OP' replies, there can be ways to balance it.
Yes! A light source you can carry would be really useful. Otherwise you either have to leave a bunch of torches in caves you're done exploring or go around picking them all up again. Even just making torches emit some light when they're in your hand would be good.
The hand lantern would have to be selected to work, so when you scroll off of it to say use a sword, you lose the light.
also how about a helmet that is like a miner's hardhat, with a light?
combine a redstone torch with a helment of any type to make that helmet a 'headlight helment"?
or perhaps it will only work with stone.. as I've suggested new 'smoothstone tools' in a Feature Request as well.. a smoothstone helmet combined with a redtorch would be instant headlight, and would be great for frontal light.

Edit:
this idea is from this thread:

nothing new of course.
