Okay as you know, digging for iron is a ***** and takes many hours hunting for it.
Its rare enough that you almost DONT want to build railroads and minecarts because of the heavy intake of iron.
Well, in case you didn't know, aluminum is one of the most common metals on earth and is used for a lot of things.
If you paid attention in chemistry class, iron is very heavy and isn't practical for something like a boat, or plane.
This is just an idea i had a while ago but I need to post it now before someone else thinks of it...
If you add aluminum into the game, then you have an iron supplement that is more common. You can't build tools out of it, but you can use it for minecarts and it should be a little more rare than coal but more common than iron, that way you can have a steady supply. Aluminum tools should be like gold, a gimmick, but with this new metal you can make blocks of it easier than iron blocks which is a waste of iron if you ask me. So far, people either:
1. Use an inventory editor for iron or iron-based products
or
2. Preserve their iron and never use it.
I'm sorry, but that sucks. If you add aluminum, you can make tracks easier, and then you add the possibility of a metal boat or planes, because iron is too heavy for aircraft. You'd still have to smelt the aluminum out of its ore for it to be any use, but its just like coal and charcoal. We've always had coal, but when starting out, it limited where you could find it, now that there is charcoal, you can build a starting base anywhere.
With aluminum you can do many of the same things as iron, but there is a bigger surplus of aluminum and possible new uses.
To summarize my proposal: Aluminum will be easier to find than iron, and easier to make railroads with. Aluminum is lighter than iron, and can be used to make aircraft or light metal boats.
Any feedback is accepted, and IF you don't think this fits into minecraft, than you're crazy because since when does building a door of obsidian take you to hell? Aluminum is another wacky idea that would make gameplay easier and more fun.
Also, as ArbyXD said, this is intentionally what i wanted from this suggestion, and you can read his quote here:

Aluminum should be added for a material between cobblestone and iron for crafting tools, and should be used to craft mine carts, but not replace iron for tracks, just boost how many tracks you get from one craft. Aluminum could also be used to craft boats that don't break when they hit things going at higher speeds. Aluminum rods could be created so you could craft tools with stronger handles, for increased durability.
I was in a rush when i proposed this idea, and this is what I am going for. Iron is too rare to have so many uses, so lets bring in Aluminum.
Many of you have suggested also silicon, but If I encourage any more leaps into the game Notch might stop reading this post. Let's just stick with aluminum because that's what I'm going for right now, adding a whole new resource is game changing, but this is a must. Many people thought charcoal would be bad, but it didn't change much. Think of it as what charcoal did to coal. Just made it easier to obtain.
Not fond of the airplanes idea in Minecraft... seems out of place for the game. Not sure what materials are needed to make steel, but if aluminum+iron=Steel, then that seems pretty sweet.
Aluminum and silicon can make solar panels the real way. Add in silicon and I am in.

I am just a guy looking for good suggestions that are original, creative, and match the theme of Mine-craft. I have some mob ideas that I need help forming which is a community project.

Just increasing the generation rate for iron would accomplish much the same thing. I don't usually have much of a problem finding iron; I think the rate went up about two updates ago.
Sir, I do believe you've overlooked one very fundamental thing about aluminum: While it is abundant in the earth's crust, it is never naturally found as a free metal due to its reactivity and can only be extracted from its ores through the Wohler Process.
The only reason we have such an abundant supply of aluminum now is because of the advent of the Hall-Heroult Process, which was much more practical and efficient.
TL;DR: You can't find aluminum naturally.
Either way, I'm not too fond of the idea.

Are you always so pessimistic?
Yes, yes I am. A pessimist is always either right, or pleasantly surprised.

What would iron (if not replaced outright) craft if aluminum took its recipes? Just the tools?
What would steel craft?

There isnt enough for it and its already used for
Armor
Minecarts
Minecart Tracks
Weapons
Tools
Buckets
Doors
Blocks
and thats just off the top of my head. This is a great addition, and minecraft needs it!
