So, I use this mod called "Better Combat", and it enables the player to dual wield weapons, among other tweaks. The way it does this is: to hit with your offhand, you right click while holding a weapon in your offhand slot, unless you right click on something that has a right click function, in which case it just doesn't work. In the default configuration of the mod, your offhand is 50% weaker. Also, invincibility frames (where mobs/players briefly turn red and become immune to further attack damage for half a second when you hit them) are separate for main and offhand attacks, allowing you to deal two blows with two weapons in rapid succession.
I believe all of this should be added to Vanilla Minecraft, except instead of the offhand being 50% weaker, it should only be slightly weaker, and a bit slower, than the main hand.
Then a new potion: Potion of Dexterity. This would add a new status effect: dexterity, which makes the offhand just as strong and quick as the main hand for as long as the effect lasts.
And maybe a new enchantment: Sentience. This is a sword enchantment that would make the enchanted item more effective in your offhand, with the maximum level making it just as effective in your offhand as if it were in your main hand.
Then, if you combine the potion of dexterity with the sentience enchantment, it would make your offhand even more effective, and even increase the effectiveness of your main hand, if you're holding the enchanted item in your main hand.
Also, mobs. Zombies would be slightly stronger when dual wielding, but rarely spawn naturally with two weapons. However, it would still be only a single hit. Skeletons, though not naturally spawning with melee weapons, are ambidextrous and know how to dual wield (no dual-wielding bows, that would be too powerful), and also know how to use shields. Zombie pigmen would be just like players as far as dual wielding melee weapons, but would rarely spawn naturally with two weapons.
Not really. Weapon cooldown is .6 seconds on a sword, meaning that if you you time your different strikes right, you could dual wiel strike someone once every .3 seconds with th suggestion.
That's 3 hits per second...
However, they wouldn't be able to use a shield, and the offhand would be weaker and slower, making it actually fairly balanced. Basically, the player is trading off some of their ability to block damage from their opponent for the ability to do a little extra damage to their opponent. Trust me. I thought this through before posting it.
Combat is at the perfect speed right now, and the offhand is an "Utility" feature, which makes it unique from other offhand mods. This also promotes using variety in your play style, which instantly gives it a bonus.
Letting the player attack twice would revert back to the mindless spamming even with its nerfs because the game was only balanced around 1 weapon.
Also, dual wielding two axes could be a true nightmare
Why is the enchantment to improve off-hand wielding called "sentience"? Having a smarter or more aware weapon doesn't automatically mean it's easier to use...

What it can do, however, is recognize what you're trying to do and assist you. That's why.

And wielding two weapons another thing that you could include in your play style. Do you want extra protection or extra damage? That's basically what this is.

Not really. Again, some players would continue to use shields because they're better at defending than pure attacking. Also, it's not really "mindless spamming" as not only is the offhand slower, but it takes a different button from the main hand.
Also, dual wielding two axes could be a true nightmare
OK. You have a point here. Perhaps axes would be the exception; basically, offhand attacking would be impossible while holding an axe.

Two Diamond Swords could do 17.5 damage in under a second before enchantments and assuming 50% damage from offhand. With Sharpness 4 on both, you do 23.625 damage if my math is right. That is crazy strong. With Strength or even these new potions this is a death machine. Especially considering swapping from shield to dual wield takes just over half a second. This just doesn't seem balanced at all

One Thing... We Can At least use Axes and A sword in Offhand To Cut Zombes To Pieces. Also, There Should Be Special Sword Enchantments Which Are Only For Off-Hand.
99.9% Support
But Yes, It Should NOT BE OVERHAULED, Because Still minecraft is more of Building And Adventure Than Just Combat.
I don't think we should have the ability to have enchantments, potions buffs and dual wielding. That is so unbelievably too much. No supports.

I agree and like the idea, though I think it should stay at 50% so it's not OP. If it's 50 percent for offhand so doing a double-hit or triggered attack (which is how I think it should be called since that exists in DND and stuff) wouldn't technically be stronger than a crit, but would still be giving you some advantages when it comes to combos. this way it's a pretty balance feature with advantages and disadvantages that doesn't just completely overhaul PVP

I think that would be a good trade of. having an extra thing in your of hand instead of a sheild

why don't you just click once and both hands stack at the same time

Edit after point brought up by DrWeegee:
Axes would not be dual-wieldable, as that would be too OP. While holding an axe, offhand attacking would be turned off.
I think my entire critique can just be summed up to just using the mod and having this stay far, far away from Multiplayer.
Very good! I support double weilding!

You do remember the fact that since 1.9, weapons have cooldown, making things like two invincibility frames rather than one not so OP?

Although, to be fair, it would make it easier to assassinate new players. Overall, however, this would be a good update.

Arrows in offhand should allow bows to draw 20% faster
Swords in offhand should do less damage unless it is a crit.
Tridents and Maces shouldn't be able to be dual-wielded in the offhand.
Axes could be dual wielded if the offhand one losses it's ability to disarm shields and does less damage.
I think that would be a good trade of. having an extra thing in your of hand instead of a sheild
