While playing minecraft, I inevitably have the following scenario happen. I am happily mining away deeper and deeper into a dungeon until my inventory is bulging with hard earned iron, maybe a few diamond, and coal. I'm just about to pack it up and head back to the surface when I hear SSssss.... BOOM, and i'm launched down a chasm and killed, and my items are scattered to the winds. Often when coming back they are gone, I'm assuming because they are not persistant.
That is part of the reason I love this game, and also part of the reason I hate it. The above scenario will often lead me to quitting the game in frustration, to come back in a few days. Now, I understand that I can play in peaceful mode, but really, that's not what I want. I like the suspense and fear of crawling around dark corners. What I don't like is losing hours worth of work for it.
What I propose is that when killed, it creates a persistant placeholder block that is your corpse, which will contain all your items when you are killed. This would be similar to a chest. This way, you still have to be careful and do not want to die, but it doesn't have to invalidate potentially hours of mining. You can head back and recover your lost loot.
Alternatively, having creepers actually loot these items, so that killing them would allow you to recover your lost items.
My advice would be to carry chests around at key intervals (mining away from these chests) and placing your precious inside it until you are ready to leave.
Well, the items ARE persistant, but only for 5 minutes after you load the chunk in which you died. If I die in a mine ten chunks out of the area which loads when I respawn, then the items there remain, stored in the chunk data, till I reenter the chunk, when they start the countdown. It's simply a matter of finding the items, and that is the risk you take by mining around in caverns. There is a penalty for dying, and potentially losing items is that penalty.
Corpses would really detract from Craftmine, as well. I don't want dead miners laying around my mineshaft, and at the rate I die at.... whooo boy.
Also, in regards to creepers and mobs picking up your loot:

The creeper would de-spawn and if it didn't it would screw up the game.
In what way would it screw up the game? As far as I know, it's perfectly possible to have a mob, or even a few, stored as non-despawnable. After a certain time and number, it might get a little fustrating, but it wouldn't screw up anything.
Not saying I really agree with the idea, as it would be fiddly and irritating, but its possible.
