Ever since sneaking has been put into minecraft i have been wondering the same thing, why is it called sneaking? So far the only things it did was make you move slower, hide your name online, stop you from falling off ledges, and prevent your crops from dying. Here is my small suggestion to the sneaking mechanic
In my opinion sneaking should give you the ability to go past/sneak up on hostile mobs without being detected. For example, if you have half a heart left and you are carrying 3 diamonds you can sneak past the skeleton near your house and safely reach your chest full of grilled pork. This improved sneaking can also allow you to safely get into sword range of creepers without them trying to blow you up.
to further facilitate this new sneaking mechanic, you can craft boots out of wool to make slippers(?) these will have very low durability but will make you even harder to detect by mobs and you will not even be detected when walking at full speed. furthermore, your footsteps will not make sound.
Tl:Dr pressing the sneak button should give you the ability to sneak up on/past hostile mobs
"HMM IM LAZY TO USE A BED OR WAIT UNTIL NIGHT I THINK ILL USE SNEAK TO GO MINING AND STUFF AND ENEVR EVER GET ATTACKED OR GO HUNTING WITHOUT BEING FOUND."

Ok, first of all, in most caves its dark regardless so mobs can still spawn in them, so even if its day or night you can still get attacked
second, im not saying sneaking will be an "Omg im invisible win lolz" button, you should still be able to get detected while sneaking if a hostile mob looks in your direction for example
not exactly a "IM TO LAZY TO MAKE A BED LULZ" button
Im sorry but this isnt very good , the point of Minecraft is to survive and how are you gonna do that when everytime you see a creeper you instantly spam shift so that it all of a sudden doesnt see you.

And, you forgot:
"Prevents you from falling off of a ledge while building a floor at lethal heights."

And I think its fine if the mob turns in your direction.
