This is a very simple suggestion and I do not know if it has already been suggested.
With the new update to the beta, logs will never burn infinitely. Many people had fireplaces with infinitely burning logs but now they do not because the logs went away.
I think, firewood should be added to the game.
Firewood would simply look like a log, maybe just a bigger version of the stick, and it would burn forever.
I don't have any ideas on how to build it, maybe just put a single plank anywhere in the build zone.

Any better idea for firewood would be greatly appreciated.
I don't really have anything else to say about this because I think it's rather simple.
You know, I'm getting a bit tired of people just replying "Netherrack" to this. Have you guys heard of SMP, by any chance? Also, aesthetically, a fireplace with burning logs is not the same as a pit of burning hell stone.
And yes, aesthetics are important. If they weren't, there would be no reason build anything beyond a dirt hut.
I understand your sentiment, however it's a good idea to adapt.
Why can't you use netherrack to have a fire? I use ladders to emulate towel racks in bath-houses, I even use them to emulate large handles for doors. Given the limitations, sometimes it's better to work with what you have.
There is probably a good reason for Notch to remove infiburning. This is probably in line with his removal of /home. Now, I don't have a mental link to his brainstem, but I believe he had a reason for this.

Didn't it make forest fires burn forever?
Also, an infinitely burning item would be horrbily imbalanced, especially when combined with how easy it is to create. Easily fields of burning fire plains.
Because you are playing SMP and don't have netherrack! That was kind of my point. I can live with different looking fireplaces, but the current situation in SMP is no fireplaces.

Astheics are important, but balance much more so.
...netherack? so easy to create, you just have to find it...
Besides netherack firewood sounds good if you don't have obsidian. It could be crafted like :

Maybe this gives you 2 blocks each? (In recent update logs do not burn forever.)
i know this topic is waaay old, but i was going through my old posts and i want to bump this.
i also would like to add an idea.
besides the fact that burning hell stone looks bad in a cozy home, the firewood could be placed on the flat surface of the fireplace. Currently, you have to dig the netherack a little hole, but with firewood you would not.
ALso, the firewood in game should look something three little logs making a little pyramid. (i would do something digitally but i suck at it)

I hated it. =\ I used flint and steel to take out the larger tree canopies. Flaming eyesores riddled my world.
