MAKE THIS A MOD, this is a pretty cool idea, but how exactly would the magnets work? would it come at you can hit you or just land without breaking blocks or what? I support this mod idea, now find a modder for it.
its a magnet that you place 100 blocks away then meateors get attracted to it

1: Moldavite doesn't seem to have any special qualities to justify adding it to Minecraft
2: Why would you want to add random chance meteors that can break through everything including obsidian? I can't stop them from completely obliterating my hard work! I'm never safe!
Ok,one thing, don't pick on redstone .How else would you make note blocks and simple compasses and clocks?
It's nice and I want meteorites,it be nice if it had a special ore.
You don't have to justify something to make it a mod.
It shouldn't break through obsidian though.
It brings in a new element to Minecraft, but not one too big, like adding too many weapons or focusing on fighting mechanics. It all needs to be balanced.
The Moldavite should be extremely rare, once per approx. 75-100, as previously mentioned by someone. The radioactivity is a good idea as well, perhaps iron+ armour could offer protection? It should also require a diamond pickaxe to break, like obsidian, but it shouldn't be able to break obsidian itself. Or maybe to acquire the ore, you'd have to light it on fire (I personally like this one) or set up TNT next to it.
Also, another idea, more original (or perhaps not, I haven't read all replies), would be to have slimes spawn around the Moldavite ore. Or a similar mob.
As for its uses, there are many ideas that come to mind. Many of the ones previously suggested are good too, such as a repellent, or a tool that mutates mobs. It doesn't have to be an important artifact, I'd rather it be something designed for a more entertaining purpose.
The fact that this would occur in very rare circumstances helps make this feasible. I don't think it would dampen gameplay in any way. Moldavite could very well expand the experience one gets from playing Minecraft.
as a contributer to this idea i have had some grate ideas for it like maybe having moldavite become a fuel for a furnace or be an enhancement to furnaces allowing ores to be processed at a much higher rate of speed could be crafted like this
I like the idea but there shouldn't be a chance of hitting your house. It just hits a random area and if that happens to be your house cool. I also think that this ore should create a small crater and the area around it should have a little bit of that ore around. I think it shouldd have a half-life (a certain ammount of time till it just turns into stone I guess). Maybe this ore could be used to make a more powerful rail for the minecart that pushes faster and doesn't need to be powered?
Ok, as a majority feels that the meteorite shouldn't break obsidian, I will say it mow can not.
Also, by default, the meteorite would land 50 or more blocks away from your location.
I keep hearing about people who say stuff like: "OMG it can break obsidian i wont be able to protect my hooouse!" but if you care that much about your house, you can just edit ur inventory and make a bedrock shield! I personally like the idea, its AWESOME. Hope Notch considers this.
Can we stick to having real ores (exception of red stone that should be changed to copper)? People have suggested using bone blocks for the same purpose or using sulfur (which has a very unattractive smell) to repel mobs. That, and we have no idea what the scarecrow will do. I don't like the ore idea, but the repellent to mobs is a very useful thing to have.
new idea sence 1.66 came out you should be able to make map using a moldivite compass in the center other thin that it stays the same what it dose is shows in real time were meators will strike on that map

If there were meteors (pretty cool idea), they would be iron ore and stone.

I sincerely hope Notch considers this.
Meteors could just ruin large hours of work, I mean, you make an entire city and no matter what, a meteor destroys a section.
Maybe, the map could rarely spawn pre-made craters with moldavite, radiation and it could even spawn fire after generation (the craters)!
Then why even have meteorites?
When a meteorite falls it should make a loud sound heard all over the map.
or like this

Moldavite sounds like something a child made up.
And how does a ore control a persons mind?
Also, by default, the meteorite would land 50 or more blocks away from your location.
ITS REAL

You are obviously not familiar to coding. It would be quite simple and I doubt there would be that much lag.
