So redstone seems like it has a lot of possibilities, but there are a couple of things I've thought of that could make stuff a little bit better.
1: Refined Redstone Block
This block (made from either 4 or 9 redstone dust like all other blocks) Would be red in color, possibly with markings like stone & such. And it would produce red light (somewhere around levels 6-9) when powered. The block it's self would not conduct electricity.
This block would allow for an on/off light source of mid/high level light, allowing automatic and switched lights to be created. also by it not conducting electricity it's self, it would allow multiple blocks to be placed next to each other, yet let them be controlled independantly. This will work out even better if used in conjunction with my second suggestion.
2: Redstone conduit (aka insulated redstone wire, aka refined redstone wire)
By combining 3 redstone dust with 6 wool or wood (the three redstone across the middle horizontally, with the wool/wood on either side) you create a version of redstone wire that only conducts electricity in two directions, (The repeater has demonstrated that an item can be coded with three states, thereby allowing for the three "strait across" directions possible) and is uneffected by the flow of water. This item will allow for more tightly packed wireing (no crossed wires when placed next to each other), defend slightly against griefers (flooding) and when combined with refined redstone blocks, will allow the creation of large LED style screens/output. Also, due to it's multiple "states" it can be used as a low tech switch, allowing up to three different devices to recieve power depending on it's state. In addition, it will make for simpler transmission of power vertically.
There is an inherent problem with this idea however, and that is attempts to "bend" the flow of power. Createing a 90 degree bend version of this item would prove problematic as it would require 12 states to cover all possible power flows for it's shape, this is why I'm only suggesting the strait version.
The item it's self should place as a full block, but "adhere" to the surface it's placed on (stacked blocks would float center block) and appear as a small red tube (lit or not dependant on power state).

You know, with red stone having so many qualities, there should be a new ore to do any other electrical needs that red stone can't.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I am just a guy looking for good suggestions that are original, creative, and match the theme of Mine-craft. I have some mob ideas that I need help forming which is a community project.
The #1 thing I want to see regarding redstone is a redstone-powered light source (the existing redstone torch doesn't count because the light-output is too low to use as a light source). There's a mod I've seen that lets you do this with pumpkins, but it would be nice to have a normal light or lamp... something that sticks to the wall, can be clicked on/off or also toggled when it receives electricity or electricity is cut off.

Why? Redstone can do anything needed as is with complex enough circuits. I say just work on making redstone work better/easier (insulated wires as mentioned here, compact circuitry, vertical placement, redstone-powered light, etc.)

That's it.
I figured if it was bad that someone would at least say so.
This. Porklet approves.
