Currently, the Nether Star only has one use: To make the Beacon. What I propose is that the Nether Star should also be used for cooking / smelting items. With the Nether Star in the Fuel Slot within the Furnace GUI, the Furnace will be able to cook / smelt an infinite amount of items. Additionally, the Nether Star will not be consumed in the process. When considering the abundance of fuel and how easily one can obtain fuel, this isn't all that "overpowered", and remember, this is a late game luxury, much like the Beacon, and Elytra.
Now I will be talking about additional items which should be applicable as fuel:
- Leaves (0.5 items)
- Bed (7.5 items)
- Dead Shrub (1 item)
- Grass (0.5 items)
- Fern (0.5 items)
- Wools (1 item)
- Flowers (0.5 items)
- Double Tall Flowers (1 item)
- Torch (2 items: 1/4 of Coal)
- Sign (1.5 items)
- Wooden Doors (1.5 items)
- Wooden Fence Gates (1.5 items)
- Wooden Button (0.5 items)
- Ladder (1.5 items)
- Jukebox (7.5 items)
- Wheat (1 item)
- Hay Bale (10 items)
- Carpets (0.5 items)
- Bow (1 item)
- Bowl (1 items)
- Painting (0.5 items)
- Boats (7.5 items)
- Paper (0.5 items)
- Books (1 item)
- Fishing Rod (1 item)
- Maps (0.5 items)
- Blaze Powder (6 Items: 1/2 of Blaze Rod)
- Magma Cream (6 items)
- Fire Charge (32 items)
- Item Frame (1 item)
- (Wooden) Shield (2 items)
Additionally, as a little Easter Egg, the player can use Gun Powder, TNT, and Fireworks as "fuel", however it will blow up the furnace. This will happen if it is cooked, or used as fuel.
- Gun Powder will only blow up the furnace.
- TNT will blow up the furnace as well as some stuff around it: It will have a stronger blast, as expected.
- Fireworks will only blow up the Furnace, but in a spectacular fashion, depending on the kind of firework it is.
And now for a new kind of furnace: The Redstone Furnace.
Crafted like such:
(36 Restone Dust + 16 Nether Quartz)
the Redstone Furnace can cook / smelt items three times faster! However, the Redstone Furnace can only use Redstone Dust and Redstone Blocks as fuel. One Redstone Dust will cook / smelt 4 items, and one Redstone Block will cook / smelt 40 items. Now for those who say that this would be redundant because you could just use three furnaces, I say, you could also use three Redstone Furnaces, and this Furnace makes use of a different kind of fuel, giving the player more options.
If you've ever found yourself will an abundance of Restone, but aren't really into Redstonary, then this is the tool for you!
The Redstone Furnace will output a redstone signal when there is Redstone inside it, and/or when it is active.
Of all the new things a Nether Star could be used for, I don't think a beefed up furnace is the best one. Any player can make automated furnaces and near infinite amounts of them, so imagine having a room full of the upgraded furnaces. It all adds up in the end. Something being "late game" doesn't exempt something from being overpowered.
At first glance, I thought the redstone furnace output a redstone signal upon smelting something. I find this furnace the way it is to be very random.
"imagine having a room full of the upgraded furnaces. It all adds up in the end. Something being "late game" doesn't exempt something from being overpowered."
Imagine a blaze farm giving you infinite fuel. Something being late game is just that: Infinite fuel. Just hook all that up to your "system" and voila. It's already a thing, plus it's not that big of a deal (imo) considering that amount of Lava in the Nether (Practically infinite fuel there). This isn't meant to be "some great thing", it's just an extra use for the Nether Star.

It could output a signal when in use. I never thought about that.

You can already turn trees into nearly infinite charcoal. Furnaces can already be automated with hoppers, so I don't see why we need any upgrades.
I admit it's different, but "random"?
Using redstone as fuel is pretty out there I admit.

This sounds pretty useful.
Not having to grab blaze rods from a farm, cook logs, grab lava, yadda yadda yadda, all while adding another use to nether stars?
Also, the Redstone Furnace.
Faster cooking sounds like a really good addition, though a furnace like that wouldn't really fit the low-tech theme of MC.
Support.
This steak is so rare I threw a masterball at it!
