I've seen a couple suggestions about merchants, which means NPCs, and I don't want any non-player humans [at least in my Minecraft]. I've also seen a few suggestions for currency systems, which I'm also not really a fan of, but not totally opposed to, I just think barter works better - which brings me to my ideas of Vending and Swap.
Vending
A dispenser-like block that only output one of it's content if the correct item was input on the opposite side. The owner would fill the back of the vendor block with a supply of the item being sold, and a stack of the item at the quantity to required to purchase the supply item - for example: A vendor that supplies an iron for ten stone, if you were building something out of stone and happened to have extra iron (like myself) this would be quite helpful, and would allow you to "trade" with players, even while offline in SMP. It would be helpful (but not necessary) if food items could be stacked inside one of these vendor blocks - perhaps small stacks in storage blocks, one per stack in inventories?
Something like this:
For example a bread selling machine for miners too busy to be bothered with farming, and as you can see someone has already bought a bread, by the gold already in storage. I realize that's rather a lot to pay for a bread, but it's just an example.
Swap
Barter would go much smoother if there were a safe and reliable way to exchange items. I don't think I need to elaborate on this one too much; a way to activate a GUI for trading with another player - should look much like a chest window - showing what both parties are offering and have a set of agree buttons that lock the contents from being switched out, and a finalize button - See Diablo II, Neverwinter Nights, etc.
Is it really that hard to come out for a minute to drop some items in exchange for someone else's items? Minecraft already supports the ability to swap things :tongue.gif:

?
Anyways, I like this, the only thing that bugs me is that for the vending machine, if you're selling something, you already have to have what you want in return. Also, for vending, what happens if someone destroys your machine?

I think the purpose is to make it secure.
