Currently, we have the armour stand to put our armour on display and item frames to put our items on display, but what I don't like about the item frame is that it shrinks the item, so here we have the pedestal. The Pedestal displays items far better because it doesn't shrink the them and allows it to rotate in 3D as oppose to being fixated to 2D.
This is not intended to replace the Item Frame, but rather be a new addition in general.
The Pedestal will hold one item (or item stack) above it.
You can place / remove items onto / from the Pedestal, similar to armour stands. You could also just drop an item onto it.
An Item on the Pedestal will act exactly like a dropped item but will never de-spawn or be picked up without right clicking.
Besides being a fancy display, a Pedestal can also act as a weighted pressure plate solely for items, allowing for trap scenarios (Inspired from that Indiana Jones movie).
Three kinds of Pedestals can be made with Diorite, Andisite, or Granite like such:
This recipe will create one pedestal. They all function the same way. They just have different appearances for players who like little decoration variety. This also gives the little of use Diorite, Andisite, and Granite more of a use.

I personally like the item stand suggestion better, because it has more ways of desplaying a item, and would take up less space. I also think the weighted pressure plate idea wouldn't fit with a block meant to display items. Maybe a trapped pedestal with a weighted pressure plate in the top middle instead of another stone block?
