We all probably know about the scarecrow thing going around, but I had an idea about it. Variations of scarecrows listed below.
Animal Ward:
This variation of the scarecrow could be crafted like this:
[] []
[] []
Notch's head being a jack o' lantern. Giving off the same amount of light as a torch of course, and warding off animals at double the distance of the torch light.
The Use: This scarecrow scares off passive mobs, such as animals of course.
Reasoning: Scarecrows are scary things to animals, although I've never heard of a sheep or cow being terrified of a scarecrow, I'm sure it's happened somewhere. That is.. with a mentally ill sheep or cow that minecraft tends to house.
Monster Attractor:
This variation of the scarecrow could be crafted like this:
[] []
[] []
Where is a regular pumpkin, and gives off of course no light. Animals not being affected. This scarecrow could work at the same distance as the animal ward scarecrow.
The Use: This scarecrow would attract hostile mobs, such as skeletons and zombies to huddle around it. Attacking the mobs would still grab the attention of the mob from the scarecrow.
Reasoning: A humanoid figure stands still in the dead of the night, a zombie sees potential food and wanders over to it to investigate. Unlike a scarecrow using a jack o' lantern which would be of no interest to a mob, being a lightsource.
Monster Ward:
This variation of the scarecrow could be crafted like this:

Where the is a Jukebox, and the is Redstone Dust.
The Use: This scarecrow would ward off monsters with the distance of torch light, keeping them away with the terrifying noises of the ghast from the nether. Useful to keep at the front door incase of any nighttime escapades you might be having, and not wanting any of these pesky spider burglars to get in.
No worries by the way, not actually intending to use Notch's head for a scarecrow.

Looks pretty good, especially the wards.
No more animals trampling your crops...
No more walking outside and having your door blown up...
The monster ward gives a practical use for the Jukebox as well, a block that is highly unused by the public. So using up a diamond for an otherwise useless block is no longer a feeling of a waste of materials!
And ontop of that, I had another realization about this whole thing. Durability ..
To fix the issue of carting around a monster ward scarecrow 24/7 in your backpack, have all scarecrows harvestable but take about as long as taking down a fence with your fist. Any tool used.
This prevents people yelling, 'Overpowered!' and such, at least I hope so. Some people may believe otherwise. If there is any other things, such as ideas to extend upon this or fixes to any problems that may arise, don't be afraid to post about it!
I do hope they use wheat for the scarecrow - not wool. Incase anybody's noticed, wool is a highly used material for stuff, while wheat receives one use - bread, which is useful by itself but variety in uses makes everything better. And again, any feedback granted would be great to hear, negative or positive.

Notch has already confirmed he is adding scarecrows...
On another not as cheery note, adding multiple periods at the end of that just makes you seem that much more ignorant, I don't think you got this thread -at all-, I know there are scarecrows being planned, this is a spin-off that Minecraft could take in, to add variations instead of a do-it-all kind of scarecrow. If anything, the monster warder could also be implemented, ontop of the scarecrow they may add. So instead of being Mr. Negative, perhaps you could invest a little time from your oh so important life browsing the forums, to read a thread with actual ideas in it and grade them by your personal view instead of putting them down automatically without reading a single thing in here, much less the first line of my first post I do believe tells the reader that I know about scarecrows.
Sorry if I seem angry, it just annoys me when I see people in other threads much less mine, that post without reading.
Definitely one of the better ideas. The monster attractor would come in good use in mob traps...
But, maybe it's easier to merge the animal ward and the monster attractor into one unit, that repels animals during the day, and attracts monsters during the night. That way, it would require less coding.
True, didn't think about coding it for some reason. Any idea on how to combine the two? Just a pumpkin used you think?
I think that's pretty cool man, another idea would be like a scarcrow that attracts monsters like you said, but blows up meaning an easier way to collect things say like gun powder or like mabye scarcrows that burst into flames. I don't know, but quite like your idea
It'd be cool if you could wire up the Scarecrow to a Redstone Torch to change settings.
For example, if it isn't recieving a charge, Mobs are attracted to it, and if it is recieving a charge then it repels them.
Plus, Electrically charging a Pumpkin that's stuck on a Stick would be awesome :biggrin.gif:
Hrmm... Electrically charging a pumpkin makes me think of an exploding pumpkin. But that's for another thread, for another day.
