When a weapon or tool loses its durability it disappears right? What if they stay in your inventory like an elytra?
If a weapon or tool has like 1/4 durability gone, they lose .5 attack damage, mildly decreases efficiency, and slows down a little bit.
1/2 then the weapons/tools lose 1 heart of damage, decreases efficiency and becomes slower.
3/4 then weapons/tools lose 1.5 hearts of damage, a noticeable decrease in efficiency, and becomes noticeably slower.
4/5 then weapons/tools lose 2 hearts of damage, a harsh decrease in efficiency, and becomes harshly slower
0 durability then the weapon/tool is now broken and only has 1/4 of its base damage, breaking blocks are incredibly slow, inflicts bleeding, and you hurt yourself when using it.
The game might be more difficult when this feature will be implemented so if you don't like this suggestion that's fine.
I think it would be better to just have it's speed and efficiency remain as is instead. While tool/armour degradation was and is still a possibility for 1.9, this is way too extreme, with more of an obvious decrease in speed, attack damage, and efficiency.
I think it's better for it to remain as is, having it break, but still be able to keep the same statistics, excluding durability before it does. It adds to the skill in being able to manage your tools, and knowing when it's going to break. With Elytra, it's a different story, because that's an end-game item with a very useful mechanic, is uncraftable, and pretty valuable. So having it break would be a huge loss instead of having it be un-functional. With tools, they're a lot more cheaper and less valuable, and can be crafted instead.
This came into my mind for a while.
