So, you come across a village that you know you just don't have the time at the moment to invest any time, resources, or effort into. You're curious about what the villagers are trading, so you check out a few and you discover that one guy with the good deal you'll have to remember about later. With this in mind, you leave the village to do whatever it was you were doing and then one day something kicks over and you realize you have a bunch of _____ to trade with that one villager.
Currently, you have to go up to each and every villager to make sure whether it's the right one. Wouldn't it be awesome if you could ask one villager where another villager was last seen? Yeah, that would be phenomenally cool, but since we probably can't do exactly that I figured a simpler "direction finder" would suffice.
The way this would work would be (similar to enchanting's lapis cost) you would first have to execute a trade with the villager you're asking around with. Village reputation would determine how many trades would be needed before he'll direct you onwards, but it will always be at least 1. Once the feature is unlocked, you can then type (in a textbar embedded in the villager trading UI) in a trade description in the form of "number item for number item" (numbers could be optional, acting as a filter). Click a button to finalize the request, and when you exit the UI some sort of indicator will point the way to the villager with that trade. This indicator will disappear beyond 8 blocks from the villager that gave the directions.
This feature will only work for existing trades, you won't be able to use a potential future trade.
Wouldn't it be easier to just to label villagers how you want, instead of asking around?

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.

Well considering you can't do that outside of commands, child Villagers, or I think there is a multiplayer only trick, it isn't really effective. Besides, how often are you carrying a stack of Name Tags and an Anvil when exploring?
That said, I can't imagine this being incredibly useful. In a village like this you can probably count the Villagers on one or two hands. If it is a village you built up yourself you might have been labeling new Villagers or managing them in other ways. And most importantly, most Villager trades except high level ones stink or are similar enough not to matter.
I was really hoping this would be paying for information on nearby structures and biomes.

I should have expanded what I meant. I didn't mean using nametags, I mean just having a normal feature where you can name villagers whenever you want without the need for said tags.

Personally my preferred way would be that each villager gets a random short name - Villagers would be automatically nametagged.
The names would be short: 2 to 6 letters long (actually, 2d3 letters, so that 4 letters would be more common and 2 or 6 letteres less common).
Examples:
Bor
Yugap
Doyo
Glik
Ag
Doneff
Tai
Purgl
Akko
And so on. Those names wouldn't be 100% random, for that would make weird results like names without any vowels and stupid stuff like that, instead a very simple random name generator with simple rules would be used and that would give a distinct "flavor" to the NPC names, yet allow thousands of possible different names. The important thing for me here is to have really short names and be able to tell the NPCs apart without going into the trading GUI all the time or having to name tag them all yourself.

Weird but cool
My ears are burning.
But I don't support this suggestion, it seems quite pointless and I really couldn't picture talking to a villager.
