This is awesome! A cosmetic set of armor, a challenging end-game mob, and it's story is open to interpretation like much of Minecraft itself! I'd highly recommend posting this on /r/minecraftsuggestions, which is where the developers actually look at ideas for the game

I think you're praising this idea a bit... much.

Not the worst mob idea, but not the most "Minecraftish" either. This sounds like a player in black armor. The mob doesn't really offer much except for some extra peppered-in difficulty. And the blacksteel armor is nothing more than diamond armor reskin. Sorry, no support.
What makes a mob "minecraftish"? As for sounding like a player in black armor, eh. I admit, it isn't the most original mob, but it is more the mechanics I was focusing on, rather than the appearance. Furthermore, the mob is designed for some extra difficulty - for the players at the end-game (who have the high local area difficulty from prolonged gameplay within a focused area).
Also, Blacksteel Armor is nothing more than a Diamond Armor reskin - Diamond is the highest tier, and once you get to that point there is no variety. The drop is to allow players to express themselves, but still allowing players to recognize people in Diamond-tier armor. (Because otherwise everyone just looks the same, with the same armor, the same weapons and the same purple glow).
Nope I stand by my statement, we need a bit more challenge, as long as the mob doesn't spawn annoyingly often (which it doesn't) I don't have any problem with it.
The thing is just overpowered, and you haven't outlined any drops that would make it worth all this.
4+weapon damage is the same as Zombies, which can spawn with an Iron Sword. This mob always spawns with a Diamond Sword (1 higher damage than a Zombie with Iron Sword, far less than a Zombie Pigman) or a Diamond Axe (3 more damage than a Zombie with Iron Sword, and the same as a Zombie Pigman). Zombie Pigmen also spawn in groups, mind, which makes them a far more formidable foe, should you anger one. Of course, this mob would be devastating in groups, which is why they spawn alone.

The drop is to allow players to express themselves, but still allowing players to recognize people in Diamond-tier armor. That is some pretty strange reasoning. If a player wants to express themselves, they can change their skin. They don't need just one other armor color to do this...

A skin hidden under your Diamond Chestplate, Leggings, Boots and Helmet? Yeah, way to express yourself. And I agree that one is not enough.
We need a lot of options. This is just a starting point.
Ok, in response to people saying that it does not drop good enough loot, I have added enchanted books to its drop pool, one of which is unique to this mob.

N.. No. Dude. My entire point was to not have any other armors at all because we just don't need them. You're talking about this one piece of armor as if it's the mother of armor ideas. We have 4 armors right now that are generally unique. Yours however is diamond armor with a new coat of paint and that's it, which is used for "expressing" purposes.

Sorry, I'm gonna have to pass on this one. While I feel like it'd be a great mob in a fantasy-oriented mod or modpack, I don't think it would really fit the theme of vanilla Minecraft. Plus, it's like Cerroz said, we really don't need another form of Diamond Armor.

Lets not have colored materials, we don't need them! All we need is White Wool, plain Glass and regular old Hardened Clay!
And I am not even implying that it is the "mother of all armor ideas", but I believe that we require some variety when you get to the end-game. Your only options at the moment are "Shiny Blue with Wings" or "Shiny Blue without Wings". Leather Armor can be dyed, sure, but nobody uses that in survival mode, due to it being harder to get than Iron and have terrible defence and durability.
Edit: Anyway, what do you think of the amended drop list (the enchanted books)?

That comparison is so invalid that it successfully managed to anger me. You're comparing useful building blocks to one extra color of diamond armor. You need to not fall so deeply in love with your ideas, and take a step outside of the bubble to see the negatives. Because the negatives are there.

When you want variety, you gotta think it out. A lot of people mindlessly think "It adds variety so my idea is good!" Anything that wasn't in the game before adds variety, it's all a matter if the idea has a point or not.
Edit: Anyway, what do you think of the amended drop list (the enchanted books)?
That idea has some plausibility, though I'm not sure if I support that or not.

As I mentioned earlier (in case you didn't read it) - "We need a lot of options. This is just a starting point." (in regards to the "one extra color", and besides I did not say that it was "Black Diamond Armor" (I was considering it being that, but decided that a simple color change was not work the effort), I said something which looks similar to what the mob wears (which I cannot represent, as my skills do not extend far into art)).
And I do see your point - although how not being better or worse than Diamond is "negative" is beyond me. I see the points people are making against it - it does not fit (although I never got clarification as to if this is mechanically, conceptually or both. I assume they meant conceptually), it is OP (despite being at most as strong as a Zombie Pigman, and in far less numbers, although I get the button/pressure plate/lever argument) and the armor doesn't do anything different to Diamond (which is, again, the entire point. If it was stronger than Diamond it would be overpowered and if it was weaker than diamond it would be useless).
As for "anything that wasn't in the game before adds variety": if you define variety "a number or range of things of the same general class that are distinct in character or quality." (which makes sense, given the context of variety of armor styles) The range of the general class of "Armor" has not changed since Indev (unless you count the defenceless Elytra). Dyable Leather Armor allows for a wider variety of styles, but nobody chooses that over Iron or Diamond (or Chain, if they can get it).
On the who variety issue, I'm not seeing why just having a black alternative and no other options is a problem, but then again, who's to say there needs to be just black? I kind of would prefer if instead of it being a black knight (although the references are pretty good), it could potentially be a white knight (only less "internet defender" and more of the classic "knight in shining armor" type). Then if it dropped a white steel alternative it could be dyed similar to wool. Then you get 16 potential colors including traditional grey shades and more outlandish colors.
Or maybe just have 16 different shades of knights that can spawn but all drop the same plate metal that can be dyed. Or even keep it just a black knight but the item can be dyed. But regardless I would prefer if it dropped 1-3 of that item so it doesn't take forever to get a set.

Leather armor being dyed is the one good, unique thing that armor has. It'd be pretty dumb to copy over it over to better armors. And who cares how long it's been since we had more armor? Why does that have to be a bad thing in so many people's heads?
I am pretty certain you can dye leather armour in vanilla Minecraft just for 'expressive' purposes.
One type of armor that can be dyed over a million possible combination of colors =/= one single piece of diamond armor with one color of pixels and that's it.

The reference was actually after I made it a Black Knight mob. I chose a black mob over a white one because black is very commonly depicted as "evil" and white "good". However, maybe it could drop a black plate which could be recolored (basically it starts as itself when colored by black dye). I guess the name would then be <Color>steel (Lightbluesteel? Hmm, may need a little work). Or maybe Black Steel, Light Blue Steel, White Steel? Actually, being able to dye it is much better. I will add that.

Everything needs a starting point. If you don't start you can't finish. Do we need this? No, but does that mean its a bad thing? If Minecraft only implemented the features it needed, it would not be a very good game.

I do not see the logic in your argument. Currently leather has three purposes: Adventure Maps, Team-based multiplayer servers (where there is no better alternative) and placing on Armor Stands. When was the last time you made it in vanilla survival mode?
Yes, the texture is different from Diamond Armor's (but not as complete as the armor worn by Black Knights, so you do not confuse the two.
Well wouldn't you be able to tell because of the player nameplate? Besides it doesn't matter how good the AI is you would always be able to tell the difference in combat.
