Something got me thinking earlier how difficult it is to know where you are underground relative to other bases/caves/whatever.
I had created a portal to the nether but coming back through it to earth, it dumped me out a different gate. It's a natural one in a giant cave system. With no idea where I was, I tunneled to the surface and eventually found my way back to my base.
I wanted to connect the newly discovered cave back to my main base, but being underground made it very difficult to connect the two.
So here's what I propose:
A beacon item that you can craft, and a tracking item to go along with it. You place the beacon (say at one end of a tunnel you want to connect to) and then use the tracker so you can dig to it without all the guesswork.
It would work sort of like a compass does to your spawn point, only it would indicate the direction to the beacon instead.
I was thinking of something like that too. I was thinking of it to mark different mine entrances. I was thinking the beacons could be color coded and you could change the color of them by right clicking on them. The tracker item could track all of them with maybe a line in the color of each beacon pointing in the direction of them.
